Agrana acquires Mercator-Emba to strengthen foodservice foothold in Europe

The acquisition enhances Agrana’s position as a partner of choice for tailored formulations across dairy, bakery, ice cream, beverages, and foodservice applications.

SLOVENIA – Agrana has announced the strategic acquisition of Mercator-Emba, a Slovenian food manufacturer known for producing high-quality syrups and dessert toppings for the foodservice sector.

The deal supports Agrana’s goal of strengthening its position in Central, Southern, and Eastern Europe while advancing its “Next Level” corporate strategy, which focuses on profitable growth in the company’s food and beverage solutions segment.

Mercator-Emba, based in Izola, approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Ljubljana, employs about 100 staff and generated revenues of roughly €30 million (US$35 million) in its 2024 financial year.

The company is recognised for its strong product development capabilities and its ability to deliver customised solutions to foodservice customers.

These competencies are expected to complement Agrana’s extensive portfolio while broadening its market reach and distribution network.

“Agrana’s acquisition of Mercator-Emba opens the door to new customer segments in the fast-growing foodservice sector,” said Stephan Büttner, CEO of Agrana. “This transaction not only gives us access to additional distribution markets but also aligns perfectly with our strategy to offer innovative, high-quality solutions for food and beverage manufacturers.”

The acquisition enhances Agrana’s position as a partner of choice for tailored formulations across a wide range of applications, including dairy, bakery, ice cream, beverages, and foodservice.

Once approved by the relevant competition and regulatory authorities, the deal will integrate Mercator-Emba’s expertise into Agrana’s global production and innovation network.

Agrana operates 37 production sites worldwide, including 20 facilities in Europe, and employs approximately 9,000 people.

The company generates annual revenues of around €3.5 billion (approx US$4.0 billion). It is the world market leader in fruit preparations as well as a major manufacturer of apple and berry juice concentrates.

Agrana also holds a leading position in customised starch products, bioethanol, and sugar production in Central and Eastern Europe.

By adding Mercator-Emba to its portfolio, Agrana aims to strengthen its competitive edge in an evolving marketplace shaped by growing demand for premium and versatile ingredients.

The acquisition underscores Agrana’s commitment to delivering solutions that help customers respond to shifting consumer preferences, such as the trend toward indulgent yet convenient foodservice offerings.

The transaction is expected to close following regulatory clearance, marking another milestone in Agrana’s long-term strategy to expand its footprint in key European growth markets while reinforcing its reputation for quality, innovation, and customer focus.
