Brenntag unveils world’s first CO2-emission-free chemical distribution site in Austria

This facility represents a significant step in the company’s commitment to sustainability and climate neutrality.

AUSTRIA – Brenntag, a German chemical distribution company, has achieved a milestone with the inauguration of the world’s first CO2-emission-free chemical distribution site in Traun, Austria.

This facility represents a significant step in the company’s commitment to sustainability and climate neutrality, aligning with its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

The transformation of the Traun site into a fully CO2-free operation involved a comprehensive overhaul of its energy infrastructure, integrating advanced technologies to optimize efficiency and eliminate carbon emissions.

The key upgrades include thermal building renovations, control optimization for heated acid and alkali tanks, and the conversion of the heating system to groundwater heat pumps and low-temperature radiators.

In addition, a photovoltaic system has been installed to generate 220,000 kWh of electricity annually, covering the energy needs of the site’s heat pumps, operational consumers, and electric vehicle charging stations.

According to the company, these measures collectively result in an annual reduction of approximately 120 tons of CO2, equivalent to the total annual energy consumption of 50 households.

The unveiling of this facility was marked by a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on May 30, attended by political and public representatives, who praised Brenntag’s investment in sustainability and industrial innovation.

The Traun site is now positioned as a blueprint for future developments, serving as a global lighthouse project for Brenntag’s 600 sites across more than 70 countries.

Andreas Kicherer, Vice President of Sustainability at Brenntag Group, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “This project is much more than a technical success.”

“It’s a milestone for Brenntag’s strong commitment to delivering on sustainability and climate neutrality by 2045.”

Kicherer added, “As a science-based company with a 150-year successful track record, we know exactly what thinking and acting sustainably means – and we deliver on it.”

The initiative was co-financed by the Brenntag Carbon Fund, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainable transformation and establishing a new industry standard for carbon-free chemical logistics.

Brenntag is leading the way in environmentally responsible chemical distribution, paving the path for a more sustainable future in the industry, by demonstrating the feasibility of operating a fully CO2-emission-free distribution site.
