Cervejas de Moçambique nearly triples profit in 2024, driven by strong sales, market leadership

CDM posts record-breaking 2024 profits and increases shareholder dividends, reinforcing its dominance in Mozambique’s beer market.

MOZAMBIQUE – Cervejas de Moçambique (CDM), a subsidiary of global brewing giant AB InBev, reported a significant rise in profit for the year 2024, reaching 1.706 billion meticais (US$26.7M million)—nearly three times the previous year’s earnings.

According to the company’s annual report, gross profit for 2024 stood at 8.35 billion meticais (US$130.7 million), up from 8.15 billion meticais (US$127.5 million) in 2023. In the prior year, the company had posted a net profit of 577 million meticais (US$9 million).

Following the strong performance, CDM approved a dividend payout of 3.28 meticais (US$0.051) per share, more than doubling the figure from the previous year, reflecting increased returns for shareholders.

CDM is majority-owned by Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), which holds an 83.01% stake in the company. The Mozambican government and the National Institute of Social Security also hold 1.37% and 2.6% shares respectively.

Founded on 1 August 1995 after the privatization of MacMahon and Manica breweries in Maputo and Beira, CDM has grown to become one of Mozambique’s largest companies.

Its operations focus on the production, distribution, and sale of beer and other beverages, maintaining a dominant position in the country’s beverage sector.

CDM’s product portfolio includes iconic brands such as Laurentina, acquired in 2022, and 2M, as well as the Impala range of beers made from cassava and corn.

Introduced in 2011 and 2017 respectively, the Impala line benefits from a special tax regime, making it the most affordable on the market.

The company highlights the Impala brand as a socioeconomic initiative aimed at supporting local agriculture. The project benefits over 6,000 smallholder farmers and indirectly supports around 190,000 people across its value chain.

In 2021, CDM launched a US$180 million brewery, regarded as the most modern in Africa at the time. Located in Mozambique, the facility has a capacity of 2.4 million hectolitres, with the potential to scale to 6.7 million.

This marked the company’s largest investment since the establishment of its US$65 million Nampula brewery in 2010.
