Tate & Lyle partners with MassChallenge to accelerate food innovation

Tate & Lyle’s engagement complements its internal R&D capabilities by opening doors to proprietary technologies and enabling faster development of ingredients.

UK – Tate & Lyle PLC has announced a strategic partnership with MassChallenge UK and MassChallenge Switzerland, two globally recognized accelerators for early-stage start-ups, as part of its mission to advance health-focused and sustainable food innovation.

By joining as a foundational corporate partner in the UK programme, Tate & Lyle will support start-ups and early-stage businesses in building capabilities, expanding networks, and competing for funding.

The company is also integrating into the established Swiss programme, which already counts several leading food innovators among its partners.

Together, these collaborations address shared challenges, including improving nutrition, advancing sustainable farming and processing, and reducing food waste.

Karen du Plessis, Head of Open Innovation at Tate & Lyle, emphasized the importance of the initiative.

“This new partnership provides us with access to some of the most dynamic start-ups and early-stage companies working to develop the novel ingredients, process innovations, and sustainability solutions that our food system needs to continue to thrive,” she said.

She added that Tate & Lyle’s involvement will also help strengthen the innovation pipeline.

By supporting MassChallenge’s efforts to nurture entrepreneurs, the company hopes to “help them refine their ideas and business models to become investment-ready more quickly,” while simultaneously creating collaborative opportunities that feed into Tate & Lyle’s own innovation strategy.

Through this partnership, Tate & Lyle’s innovation leaders will collaborate closely with MassChallenge’s regional teams to identify participants aligned with its priorities.

These start-ups will then benefit from coaching, feedback sessions, and workshops designed to improve their ability to work with corporates, sharpen their market approaches, and scale more effectively.

Participants also gain access to expert mentoring, market insights, legal and fundraising support, as well as a global innovation network.

Tate & Lyle noted that its engagement, delivered through its Open Innovation programme, complements its internal R&D capabilities by opening doors to proprietary technologies and enabling faster development of ingredients.

David Kinsella, Managing Director at MassChallenge UK, acknowledged the difficulties of growing start-ups.

“Scaling an early-stage startup is never easy; validating technological breakthroughs, raising investment, developing new business models, and building highly skilled technical teams are challenges most inventors face,” he said.

Kinsella further highlighted the success of MassChallenge Switzerland as a model that can be replicated.

Over the past decade, the programme has accelerated nearly 1,000 start-ups, raised €2 billion (US$2.3 billion) in funding, and created more than 55,000 jobs.

With Tate & Lyle’s backing, he said, MassChallenge UK is working to build a world-renowned innovation hub in East London’s Royal Docks.
