The AB InBev-owned brewer is expanding its Beyond Beer portfolio as ready-to-drink beverages gain momentum across African markets.

ZAMBIA – Zambian Breweries, a subsidiary of global beverage company AB InBev, has launched MXD, a 5% ABV ready-to-drink (RTD) vodka cocktail brand in Zambia, expanding its Beyond Beer portfolio.
MXD joins AB InBev’s Beyond Beer category, which includes Brutal Fruit Spritzer, Mike’s Hard Lemonade and BEATS. The brand is already available in South Africa under the name Redd’s MXD.
The company said the launch would expand its participation in the growing RTD category while creating opportunities to reach new consumers.
“MXD expands our Beyond Beer portfolio, allowing us to participate in a high-growth category, recruit new consumers, and create new opportunities for sustainable growth,” the company said.
MXD is positioned for consumers seeking products associated with authenticity, self-expression, social connection and shared experiences. The brand is designed around occasions when friends gather and consumers seek convenient alcoholic beverages.
“This launch also demonstrates the strength of our people and the power of a business united behind a common goal. Success in today’s environment requires innovation, agility, and flawless execution. MXD is a reflection of all three,” said Thais Cavinatto, Managing Director of Zambian Breweries.
Zambian Breweries was established in 1968 and became part of SABMiller in 1994. AB InBev acquired SABMiller in 2016, bringing Zambian Breweries and other SABMiller African subsidiaries under its ownership.
The brewer produces brands including Mosi Lager, Castle, Carling Black Label, Eagle, Flying Fish and Castle Lite, alongside international brands Corona, Stella Artois and Budweiser.
The launch comes as RTDs continue to expand across African beverage markets. According to the IWSR RTDs Strategic Study 2025, RTD volumes across 10 leading global markets increased 2% in 2024, while value grew 4%.
South Africa and Brazil recorded the strongest growth, with RTD volumes increasing 12% in each market during 2024. South Africa consequently moved from fifth to third among the world’s top 10 RTD markets.
Other major beverage companies are also targeting the category. Castel has introduced lower-ABV fruity products, including Booster and Pomme Breeze, while Coca-Cola partnered with Brown-Forman to launch a Jack Daniel’s and Coca-Cola spirit cooler in Africa.
Zambian Breweries’ MXD launch follows strong financial performance in the first half of 2026. Operating profit increased 27% to ZMW413 million ($21.59 million), supported by improved productivity, cost management and commercial execution.
Net revenue rose 4% to ZMW2.86 billion ($149.54 million), while gross profit increased 31% to ZMW1.54 billion ($80.52 million).
The brewer said the performance reflected the resilience of its business and portfolio as it expands into new beverage categories.
