Checkers FreshX supermarket opens new supermarket in Johannesburg

The store features a high-end supermarket setup with in-store brands like Kauai and Krispy Kreme.

SOUTH AFRICA – A new Checkers FreshX outlet has opened at Hyde Park Corner in Johannesburg, offering what the retailer describes as a premium take on supermarket shopping.

The store is positioned as a step above the brand’s standard format, aimed at shoppers looking for more convenience and quality without paying specialty store prices.

Hyde Park Corner, known for housing fashion and lifestyle brands, now includes this upgraded grocery option as part of its wider effort to offer a more rounded retail environment.

According to mall general manager Muhammad Varachia, bringing in Checkers FreshX supports their approach of combining lifestyle, wellness, food, and fashion under one roof.

He said the store strengthens the mall’s goal of being a single destination for various shopper needs.

Alongside the supermarket, the launch includes a Petshop Science outlet, which serves as a pet care store offering essentials at supermarket rates.

The pet store features items from well-known brands such as Royal Canin, Hills, Montego, and Rogz, along with a range of toys and grooming products.

Inside the Checkers FreshX, the layout is designed to be more accessible and visually appealing, with clearly marked sections for quick navigation.

Food outlets Kauai and Krispy Kreme are located inside the supermarket, expanding the store’s focus beyond groceries into fast-casual dining.

Customers can also find dedicated sections for meat, baked goods, and prepared meals, with the meat market stocking free-range chicken and premium cuts.

Other service points include a sushi bar, a wine section, a health and wellness shelf, and a Money Market counter for bill payments and other financial services.

The produce area has also been revamped to include a wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.

This is the latest step by Checkers to grow its FreshX concept, which blends convenience with a more upmarket shopping style.

Prices remain in the supermarket range, with items starting at roughly US$6.00 and going up to about US$2,700 for select credit-linked products and services.

By offering both premium and everyday products in one place, the store aims to capture a broader segment of Hyde Park’s customer base.
