Suntory CEO Takeshi Niinami resigns amid police probe into illegal supplement purchases 

JAPAN – Suntory Holdings has announced the resignation of its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Takeshi Niinami, following a police investigation into his purchase of illegal supplements.  

The resignation took effect on 1 September, according to a statement from the Japanese drinks conglomerate. 

The company explained that Niinami informed Suntory on 22 August about the investigation. Following this disclosure, the group immediately sought legal counsel and conducted an internal interview with the executive. 

“During the interview, he explained that the investigation had been conducted regarding the supplements that were allegedly purchased by him under the understanding that they were legal,” the company said. 

Suntory emphasized that while the legality of the supplements remains subject to investigation, compliance with laws and regulations is fundamental for its leadership. 

The company added that Niinami’s lack of caution in purchasing supplements rendered it inappropriate for him to continue in the top role. 

After discussions, Niinami offered his resignation, which was accepted by the board. Suntory noted that the supplements in question were not produced by the company. 

Nobuhiro Torii, appointed as President in March 2025, will continue to lead the group. Suntory confirmed that no replacement will be named for the CEO position. 

Niinami had served as CEO and President of Suntory since October 2014, marking the first time the role was held by someone outside the founding family, which had managed the group for four generations. 

The leadership change comes during a challenging period for Suntory. For the first half of 2025, the company reported a 2.4% decline in alcohol sales, citing reduced demand in the US and Europe.  

In 2024, the company rebranded its spirits business, changing the name from Beam Suntory to Suntory Global Spirits. 

The group reiterated its commitment to compliance, transparency, and maintaining trust as it navigates the leadership transition.
