Egypt, Türkiye target stronger poultry trade and investment ties

EGYPT – Egypt and Türkiye are looking to expand co-operation in poultry trade, investment and technology as Cairo seeks new opportunities for its growing poultry industry.

Egyptian Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister Alaa Farouk held talks with a delegation of Turkish businessmen and investors led by Türkiye’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, with poultry and agricultural export representatives also taking part.

The discussions centred on increasing private-sector partnerships, expanding agricultural and poultry trade, transferring modern technologies and developing livestock and poultry supply chains.

Farouk said Egypt was working to improve conditions for domestic and international investors by addressing barriers to investment and creating a more supportive business environment.

Poultry was a major focus of the talks as Egypt looks to find additional markets for production after rapid growth in domestic output has contributed to oversupply and weaker prices.

Specialised Egyptian farms produced about 1.6 billion broiler chickens in 2025, up from roughly 1.4 billion the previous year, while rural and native chicken production reached around 360 million birds.

Egypt produced approximately 2.4 million to 2.5 million tonnes of poultry meat in 2024, with specialised farms accounting for about 2.09 million tonnes, according to sector and government data.

The country also produced about 16.6 billion eggs in 2024, including roughly 14 billion table eggs, while poultry-related activities support about 3.5 million direct and indirect jobs.

With domestic production covering about 97% of poultry meat demand and table egg supplies exceeding local requirements, Egypt has increasingly looked towards export markets to absorb additional production.

Against this backdrop, the Egyptian and Turkish sides discussed the possibility of using Türkiye as a regional gateway for Egyptian poultry and poultry products to markets in neighbouring countries.

The proposal would draw on Türkiye’s geographical position and established logistics and supply networks to facilitate access to surrounding markets.

The two sides also agreed to arrange visits for Turkish investors to poultry farms, modern slaughterhouses and major agricultural projects in Egypt to assess potential investment and technology opportunities.

Türkiye itself has a substantial poultry industry, producing about 2.5 million tonnes of chicken meat in 2024, while output is estimated to have risen to between 2.7 million and 2.8 million tonnes in 2025.

The country produced 232,238 tonnes of chicken meat in June 2026, a 14.7% increase from the same month a year earlier, while the number of chickens slaughtered rose 14.4% to 123.3 million.

Egg production has also expanded, reaching 1.84 billion hen eggs in June 2026, up 21% year on year, with first-half output increasing by about 18.6%.
