Guinness Nigeria returns to profitability with US$10.6M gain amid revenue surge

The brewer reports strong financial turnaround, buoyed by higher sales, reduced forex losses, and improved operational efficiency.

NIGERIA – Guinness Nigeria Plc has recorded a significant turnaround in its financial performance, reporting a profit after tax of ₦16.2 billion (US$10.6M) for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025.

This marks a strong recovery from a loss of ₦54.7 billion (US$35.8M) in the same period of the previous year, driven by strong domestic and export sales, cost discipline, and reduced foreign exchange losses.

According to its audited financial statements, revenue rose by 65.8% to ₦496 billion (US$324.5M) from ₦299.4 billion (US$196.1M), reflecting increased demand across its portfolio of brands, including Guinness Stout and Malta Guinness.

The company attributed its improved performance to a resilient product mix, enhanced efficiency, and the effective execution of strategic priorities.

Foreign exchange losses fell significantly to ₦9.56 billion (US$6.3M) from ₦41.1 billion (US$26.9M), contributing to the bottom-line improvement. Gross profit grew by 62.2% to ₦148.3 billion (US$97M), while operating profit surged by 86.6% to ₦47.4 billion (US$31.0M).

The results underscore the company’s ability to navigate macroeconomic challenges and remain competitive in Nigeria’s beer and beverage industry.

Marketing and distribution expenses increased by 40% year-on-year to ₦69.4 billion (US$45.4M), reflecting continued investment in expanding reach and strengthening consumer engagement. The company maintained its focus on cost control and operational efficiency despite inflationary pressures.

This financial rebound coincides with Guinness Nigeria’s 75th anniversary, marking a milestone in its operations and long-standing presence in the country.

The board chairman, Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, stated that the performance reflected the company’s governance strength and leadership quality.

Managing Director and CEO Girish Sharma highlighted the dedication of the team and affirmed the company’s ambition to become one of the most trusted consumer goods firms in Nigeria.

He reiterated its focus on delivering shareholder value and contributing to socio-economic development in the communities it serves.

In June 2024, Tolaram Group acquired Diageo’s majority stake in Guinness Nigeria for ₦81.60 per share.

Despite the transition, Guinness Nigeria retained exclusive rights to manufacture and distribute Diageo-owned brands such as Guinness, Johnnie Walker, Singleton, and Baileys within the Nigerian market.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to long-term growth and continues to focus on enhancing value through operational excellence and strategic expansion.
