Jaza opens 24th branch in Syokimau marking steady retail growth

The fast-growing supermarket chain has opened a new store in Syokimau and plans to launch its 25th outlet this Saturday in Muthiga, Kenya.

KENYA – Jaza Supermarket has opened its 24th store on Katani Road in Syokimau, adding another milestone to its rapid growth across Nairobi’s residential zones.

The new outlet, which launched on Saturday, May 24, 2025, aims to meet rising demand for affordable everyday products in the fast-developing Syokimau area.

The Katani Road branch reflects Jaza’s focus on accessible and affordable shopping experiences, particularly in underserved neighborhoods.

This store follows closely after the launch of their Kasuku Centre outlet in Kileleshwa, signaling the company’s strategy of locating in areas with growing middle-income populations.

“The Katani Road outlet represents a significant milestone in our expansion strategy,” said Willy Kimani, CEO of Jaza Supermarket. “Syokimau has emerged as one of Nairobi’s most dynamic residential hubs, with families and professionals seeking quality, convenience, and affordability.”

“This new branch allows us to directly address those needs while continuing our growth in other key areas like Kileleshwa and Kirawa Road with our recently opened Kasuku Centre and Kirawa West Mall location.”

The new Syokimau branch sticks to Jaza’s proven compact format. Shoppers can expect quick access to fresh groceries, household basics, and personal care items at consistently low prices. The store’s efficient layout helps keep operating costs low, a benefit that is directly passed on to customers.

The company has also confirmed that its 25th store will open this coming Saturday, May 31, 2025, in Muthiga, further extending its reach into key suburban areas.

Community-focused model

Jaza’s approach is centered around convenience. Each location is placed within or near residential estates, making it easier for families and working professionals to shop without traveling long distances.

The Katani Road location is expected to draw a steady customer base from the surrounding estates, including families relocating to Syokimau in search of better living conditions near Nairobi.

In a recent LinkedIn post, the company expressed gratitude for the support from the Syokimau community, saying, “Our newest store is officially open on Katani Road and the launch was a success—thanks to all of you who showed up and showed love. We can’t wait to serve the Syokimau community with even more convenience, great deals, and low prices.”

Jaza’s growth in the past year has been strong. In August 2024, the retailer opened two stores in Athi River and Mirema Drive.

Market shifts influence expansion

The supermarket’s expansion is also shaped by Kenya’s growing retail market. According to recent data, kiosks still lead in consumer spending capturing 57.7% of FMCG spending, but supermarkets are gaining ground.

Trendtype, a London-based market analysis firm, observed that rising living costs have opened opportunities for smaller format stores offering basic product ranges and appealing prices.

With the Syokimau store now operational and the Muthiga outlet set to open this Saturday, Jaza continues to focus on neighborhoods that larger supermarket chains often overlook. The company remains on track to reach its target of 40 stores by the end of 2025.
