Nestlé Saudi Arabia, KAUST sign strategic MoU to advance food, agriculture, packaging innovation

The partnership will focus on developing innovative, science-driven, and sustainable solutions that enhance food safety, public health, and environmental sustainability.

SAUDI ARABIA – Nestlé Saudi Arabia has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), establishing a framework for collaboration in packaging, agriculture, and food technology.

The agreement, signed in the presence of senior officials from the Ministry of Investment, marks a major step toward strengthening research and innovation in Saudi Arabia’s food ecosystem.

The ceremony was attended by Yasser Abdul Malak, chairman and chief executive officer of Nestlé Middle East and North Africa; Robert Helou, chief executive officer of Nestlé Saudi Arabia; and Dr. Ian Campbell, senior vice president of the National Transformation Institute at KAUST.

Both institutions emphasized that the partnership will focus on developing innovative, science-driven, and sustainable solutions that enhance food safety, public health, and environmental sustainability.

The collaboration will leverage KAUST’s advanced research capabilities, with scientists representing over 120 nationalities, and Nestlé’s global expertise in food science and technology.

Areas of focus include nutrition science, sustainable packaging, and agricultural innovation aimed at improving crop productivity and resource efficiency.

The initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 by promoting local R&D, strengthening food security, and supporting the development of a knowledge-based economy.

Commenting on the new partnership, Helou said, “This collaboration builds on Nestlé’s ongoing investment in Saudi Arabia and contributes to improving quality of life through research and solutions that support sustainable food supply chains and meet the evolving aspirations of the Saudi market, in alignment with Vision 2030.”

This agreement also reinforces Nestlé’s long-term investment in the Kingdom. In November 2022, the company signed an investment agreement worth SAR 7 billion (US$1.86 billion) over ten years to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and expand research and development activities.

Dr. Campbell added, “By combining KAUST’s research excellence with Nestlé’s industrial leadership, this agreement aims to deliver solutions in food, health, and agriculture that promote sustainable development and enhance food security.”

Dr. Rania Abou Samra, head of R&D and innovation at Nestlé MENA, noted that food technology innovation is key to achieving a healthier and more sustainable future.

Both parties affirmed that the partnership will translate research into practical projects supporting sustainability, food safety, and human well-being at the heart of Saudi Arabia’s transformation goals.
