QUT, Japan Bioindustry Association forge partnership to drive biomanufacturing innovation

The collaboration will strengthen sustainable bioeconomic growth through shared research, industry collaboration, and advanced pilot-scale technologies.

JAPAN / AUSTRALIA – Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Japan Bioindustry Association (JBA) to advance collaboration and innovation in biomanufacturing across Japan and Australia.

The agreement seeks to accelerate the growth of bioindustries in both nations, fostering economic and social benefits while supporting a sustainable future grounded in bioeconomy principles.

Recognised internationally as a significant player in bioeconomy research, QUT continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of biomanufacturing through its Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy.

The university partners closely with industry, government agencies, and research organisations to translate scientific discoveries into commercially viable technologies.

Its expertise spans process development, scale-up, technoeconomic assessment, and life-cycle analysis — capabilities that enable it to bridge the gap between research and large-scale industrial applications.

At the heart of QUT’s infrastructure is the QUT Pioneer BioPilot, located in Mackay. Recently upgraded through a US$18 million investment, the facility has become Australia’s leading pilot-scale fermentation hub.

Supported by the Australian and Queensland governments and developed in partnership with the Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA), the BioPilot provides a platform for collaboration between researchers and innovative companies developing new food and bioproducts.

By helping industry partners bring sustainable, bio-based solutions to market, the facility strengthens Queensland’s position as a globally connected innovation hub for biomanufacturing.

Professor Ian O’Hara from QUT’s Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy highlighted the BioPilot’s longstanding role in translating research into real-world impact.

“For over 15 years, the QUT Pioneer BioPilot has supported industry in converting biomass such as sugarcane biogases into biofuels, green chemicals, and bioproducts,” he said. “Real-world impact is at the heart of QUT’s research commitment, where knowledge and innovation tackle global challenges and deliver locally grounded solutions.”

The Japan Bioindustry Association, Japan’s leading bioindustry organisation, represents members across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, cosmetics, food and beverage, IT, chemicals, and energy.

As a non-profit organisation, JBA fosters open innovation by bridging academia and industry, promoting global partnerships, and supporting biotechnology-driven economic growth.

Dr Leon Scott, QUT Director of Research Infrastructure Operations, described the partnership as a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability.

“This MOU strengthens our international collaborations and positions QUT and JBA to lead advancements in biomanufacturing that will benefit both economies and contribute to a sustainable future,” he said.

JBA Managing Director and CEO Tetsuya Tanaka welcomed the partnership, noting Queensland’s strong government support for synthetic biology and its rich bioresources.

“Australia offers abundant feedstock sugars and renewable energy for fermentation,” he said. “With QUT’s advanced pilot plant in Mackay, Queensland is an ideal partner for Japan in advancing biomanufacturing innovation.”
