Refresco agrees to acquire insolvent Rhenser Mineralbrunnen

Refresco will acquire Rhenser Mineralbrunnen’s operations and production assets, strengthening its mineral water portfolio and expanding manufacturing capacity in Germany’s glass bottle segment.

GERMANY – Refresco has agreed to acquire the business operations of insolvent German mineral water and soft drinks producer Rhenser Mineralbrunnen, strengthening its production capacity and brand portfolio in Germany.

The agreement was reached with the company’s provisional insolvency administrator and Managing Director Holger Sieck and has received approval from the creditors’ committee.

In a statement, Refresco said the transaction would ensure the “preservation and continuation” of the Rhens-based beverage producer, which entered preliminary insolvency proceedings in March.

The acquisition includes Rhenser Mineralbrunnen’s manufacturing facilities in Rhens, although the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. The company produces mineral water, flavoured water and soft drinks under the Rhenser, Silvetta and WasserGlück brands.

Refresco also confirmed that the majority of Rhenser Mineralbrunnen’s employees are expected to join the company following completion of the deal. However, it did not disclose the number of employees transferring to the business.

Guido Kühne, Managing Director of Refresco Germany, said the acquisition would strengthen the company’s operations in the mineral water segment.

“With the planned integration of Rhenser Mineralbrunnen, we are specifically strengthening our brand portfolio and our production capacities in the area of mineral water in glass,” Kühne said.

The transaction is expected to close on 1 August, subject to customary closing conditions.

Refresco Germany manufactures fruit juices, soft drinks and plant-based beverages for retail and industrial customers, while also producing beverages for third-party brands. The company currently employs approximately 1,650 people across ten production sites and two office locations in Germany.

The acquisition follows another strategic expansion by Refresco earlier this year when it acquired US-based food and beverage company SunOpta to strengthen its presence in the plant-based drinks category.

Refresco reported revenue of €6.1 billion (US$6.95M) in 2025, up from €6 billion (US$6.84M) in 2024, while reducing its net loss to €25 million from €204 million (US$232.46M) in the previous year.

Separately, the company recently announced plans to discontinue manufacturing operations at its beverage facility in Walla Walla, United States, following what it described as careful consideration and a thorough evaluation.
