South Africa’s Flash Gala apple hits 1M carton milestone

The apple variety, developed in the Elgin Valley, has become a standout in major export markets including India, China, and Vietnam.

SOUTH AFRICA – South Africa’s Flash Gala apple has officially crossed the one million carton export mark in a single season, just six years after making its debut on the international stage.

Growers and marketers say the achievement confirms the apple’s place among the country’s top produce exports.

“We’re handling the largest Flash Gala crop in history, and it’s also the season with the fewest quality issues,” said Calla du Toit, procurement manager at Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing and chairperson of the BigBucks Growers’ Association.

“We’re undoubtedly making great strides with the variety.”

The apple, known officially as BigBucks Gala, was discovered by horticulturist Buks Nel on 18 January 2011 in a Corder Gala orchard at Oak Valley in the Elgin Valley.

It stood out immediately due to its deep red color, which developed weeks before typical Gala harvest time.

“There was a gap in the market for full-red Galas, and BigBucks Gala filled that perfectly,” Nel said. He still remembers the excitement of plant variety rights expert Hennie Venter when he saw the apple: “Buks, I think you’ve hit on something big.”

Nel added, “I’m rather chuffed, to say the least.”

Commercial planting began in 2017, followed by export trials in 2019. By 2020, volumes had grown enough to serve global markets. South Africa’s sunny climate plays a role in Flash Gala’s appeal, with apples showing higher sugar content and vibrant color.

“Flash Gala exemplifies what makes South African apples special,” Calla explained. “Brilliant color and excellent flavour.”

India has emerged as the top market for the apple, especially after American red apples became harder to find there. Flash Gala has also gained ground in China, Vietnam, Russia, and other African countries.

“The potential for growth in India and China remains enormous,” said Calla.

Strong branding pays off

The apple’s visual appeal and consistent coloring give it a marketing edge, according to Louis du Toit of Dutoit Agri. “A carton of Flash Gala apples with their uniform red hue is a visual standout,” he said.

JJ van der Spuy, commercial manager of fruit exports at Core Fruit, said brand recognition is a big factor in Asia. “Flash Gala offers crispness, shelf life, and consistency, but brand recognition truly sets it apart.”

He pointed to successful promotions in China that convinced large retailers to carry the apple. “With targeted promotions, we convinced Yong Hui Superstores to carry Flash Gala. It’s been a breakthrough in the Chinese retail market.”

Van der Spuy also confirmed that Flash Gala has now entered the Thai market after the country reopened to South African apples. “Thailand holds promising potential for further growth,” he said.

Growing pains and future plans

While the early years presented challenges such as timing the harvest correctly to avoid fruit defects, growers say they have now gained a better handle on production.

“We had issues with lenticel and bitter pit from harvesting too early, and softness from harvesting too late,” Calla said. “But over the past three seasons, we’ve improved consistency. As orchards mature and growers gain experience, quality issues have dropped significantly – even as volumes increased.”

Countries such as America, Australia, and India are now showing interest in growing BigBucks Gala. Back home, planting has slowed slightly after a period of rapid expansion, but a second growth phase is expected in cooler areas.

“The fact that we’ve developed and scaled a variety like Flash Gala proves South Africa is a leader in the global apple industry,” said Calla.

Louis du Toit added, “We should take pride in Flash Gala – not only as an industry but as a nation.”
