Starbucks rolls out AI-driven inventory management nationwide, cutting errors and boosting efficiency across thousands of stores.

USA – Starbucks has announced a nationwide rollout of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered inventory technology across its U.S. stores, marking a significant step in its digital transformation.
The coffee chain said the technology, described as “AI-powered automated counting,” will replace manual inventory tracking in all U.S. locations by the end of the month. The system has already been deployed across more than 11,000 stores in North America, according to technology partner NomadGo.
The system leverages computer vision, 3D spatial intelligence, and augmented reality to count inventory within minutes using handheld tablets or smartphones. Starbucks said the tool enables employees to instantly check stock levels for popular items such as cold foam, oat milk, and caramel drizzle.
“With a quick scan using a handheld tablet, partners can instantly see what’s in stock—ensuring beverages are always available,” said Deb Hall Lefevre, Starbucks’ chief technology officer. “This allows partners to spend less time in the backroom and more time connecting with customers.”
NomadGo described the system as 99% accurate, adding that manual inventory counting has traditionally been one of the most disliked and error-prone tasks in retail and food service. Starbucks said the technology has also increased the frequency of inventory checks eightfold and will eventually be able to automate restock orders.
The coffee chain noted that more accurate data will also speed up deliveries, reduce stock-outs, and improve overall supply chain efficiency.
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said during an investor call in July that the adoption of AI is part of a broader plan to create the “coffeehouse of the future.”
The company is working to design stores that are less costly to construct while incorporating digital innovations to improve operations.
In addition to AI adoption, Starbucks is reshaping its menu with a greater focus on health-conscious offerings. Upcoming product launches include protein lattes and protein cold foam, set to debut on September 29 in the U.S. and Canada.
The company is also introducing sugar-free beverages and coconut water-based drinks to appeal to health-focused customers.
Despite these innovations, Starbucks continues to embrace its seasonal traditions. The return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte and other autumn products in August contributed to a record-breaking sales week in the U.S., according to Bloomberg.
