Corbion joins Ferment4Health to explore health potential of fermented foods

Ferment4Health will explore how bioactive compounds produced during fermentation, particularly postbiotics, interact with the gut microbiome and the immune system.

NETHERLANDS – Corbion, the sustainable specialty ingredients company, has joined forces with Wageningen Food & Biobased Research and five other international partners in a newly launched international research project, Ferment4Health, aimed at unlocking the health-promoting potential of fermented foods and postbiotics.

This public-private research initiative aims to investigate how fermented foods and postbiotics can enhance gut health and mitigate chronic, low-grade inflammation, a key driver of many lifestyle-related diseases.

Fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and kimchi are widely consumed for their digestive and immune system benefits, but scientific validation of these claims remains limited. 

The Ferment4Health project combines cutting-edge science and real-world food innovation to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge of fermented foods and the validated health benefits they offer.

Corbion, known for its leadership in sustainable fermentation and health-focused ingredients, will contribute its expertise to help translate research into next-generation functional food solutions. 

Its portfolio already includes lactic acid and algae-based lipids, such as Omega-3 DHA, widely recognized for supporting immune and metabolic health.

Ferment4Health Project Partners

Led by Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, Ferment4Health will explore how bioactive compounds produced during fermentation, particularly postbiotics, interact with the gut microbiome and the immune system. 

“This initiative is a unique opportunity to connect academic research with industrial innovation. By understanding how fermentation products support health, we can help to develop the next generation of functional foods,” Lonneke Janssen Duijghuijsen of Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, Project Manager, stated.

Ferment4Health is co-funded by the Dutch Top Sector Agri & Food and the Top Sector Life Sciences & Health, and includes industry and research partners such as Kerry, Ani Biome, Medex, Puratos, and CNIEL.

Together, the consortium will employ a multidisciplinary approach, ranging from in vitro cell models to human clinical trials, to evaluate the impact of fermented products on intestinal health and inflammation. 

The aim is to ultimately promote knowledge-driven product development in line with growing consumer interest in gut health and sustainable food solutions.
