The US$90 million project boosts output, advances green technology, and reinforces Carlsberg’s long-term presence in Vietnam.

VIETNAM – Carlsberg has inaugurated the expansion of its Phu Bai Brewery in Thua Thien Hue Province, marking a significant step in the company’s growth and sustainability strategy in Vietnam.
With an investment of nearly US$90 million, the project increases Phu Bai’s brewing capacity by 50%, making it the company’s largest beer production facility in Asia.
The enhanced site will support Carlsberg Vietnam’s diverse portfolio, covering international premium labels such as Carlsberg, 1664 Blanc, Tuborg, and Somersby, alongside local favorites Halida and Huda. Huda, in particular, has long been recognized as the “Pride of Central Vietnam” for over three decades.
Andrew Khan, Managing Director of Carlsberg Vietnam, said the project represents a long-term investment in the Vietnamese market.
“Phu Bai is now our largest beer production site in Carlsberg Asia, equipped with advanced technology to deliver high-quality beers more efficiently and sustainably. This expansion allows us to better serve consumers, strengthen supply chains, and create greater community impact,” he stated.
The redesigned facility integrates modern technologies aimed at boosting efficiency while lowering environmental impact. Powered by renewable electricity and biomass-based steam, the brewery incorporates advanced wastewater treatment and resource management systems. The initiative supports Carlsberg’s global sustainability program, ‘Together Towards ZERO and Beyond,’ and aligns with Vietnam’s national net-zero by 2050 goals.
By 2026, the company aims to achieve a water efficiency rate of 2.0 hl/hl, fully eliminate landfill waste by the end of 2025, and reach net-zero emissions across production by 2028.
Additionally, Carlsberg Vietnam plans to transition to 100% reusable or recyclable packaging, covering bottles, cans, and kegs, reinforcing its contribution to a circular economy.
Beyond sustainability, the expansion also emphasizes safety and employee well-being. The site redesign includes updated pedestrian zoning, ventilated packaging halls with cooling systems, improved canteen facilities, and a modernized uniform management system, all of which align with Carlsberg’s global health and safety standards.
Product quality remains central to Carlsberg Vietnam’s operations, with the brewery recently earning multiple international gold medals, including Monde Selection Gold Quality Awards for Huda and Halida. These accolades highlight the craftsmanship and brewing excellence at the Phu Bai site.
Joy Rice, Vice President for Integrated Supply Chain at Carlsberg Asia, described the expanded brewery as “a blueprint for purposeful and responsible growth.”
Carlsberg was one of the first Danish multinational corporations to invest in Vietnam, entering the market in 1993. Today, it is among the leading beer producers in the country, directly and indirectly employing more than 3,800 people nationwide.
