illycaffè acquires 80% stake in Capitani to strengthen premium coffee machine production

The acquisition enhances illycaffè’s Italian supply chain by integrating coffee machine manufacturing with its global premium coffee business.

ITALY – illycaffè has announced the acquisition of an 80% stake in Capitani, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of single-serve coffee machines, primarily for home use.

The Capitani family, founders of the company, will retain the remaining 20%.

Founded in 1979 in Solbiate con Cagno, Como, Capitani is a recognised leader in the coffee machine sector, known for its technological innovation, product quality, and efficient industrial processes.

The acquisition represents a strategic step in illycaffè’s upstream integration, reinforcing its commitment to the excellence of Italian-made products and strengthening the domestic production chain.

By combining Capitani’s expertise in machine design with illy’s signature coffee blend, the company aims to optimise the preparation and delivery of authentic Italian espresso worldwide.

A key advantage of the acquisition lies in reducing reliance on non-European imports. By leveraging Capitani’s capabilities, illycaffè will increase production autonomy, while benefiting from synergies and economies of scale provided by its established international footprint.

“This acquisition marks a key step in our growth strategy. In an increasingly challenging macroeconomic environment, we have decided to continue to focus on Made in Italy products, excellence, and innovation, integrating upstream and leveraging the Italian production chain,” said Cristina Scocchia, CEO of illycaffè.

She added that despite rising raw material costs and tariffs, the company is accelerating investments to strengthen its global leadership in premium coffee.

The move aligns with illycaffè’s consolidation strategy to reinforce its competitive position in the international premium coffee market, even as the sector navigates economic pressures.

The transaction is expected to close in the coming weeks, pending regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions.
