Namibian beef enters Germany’s Block House restaurants

GERMANY – Patrons at Block House restaurants in Germany are now being served beef sourced from Namibia.

The steakhouse chain has introduced Namibian rumpsteak as part of its monthly special across its outlets.

Block House operates 42 restaurants in Germany and is owned by Eugen Block Holding GmbH, which also manages the Jim Block burger brand.

This development comes after an agreement was reached between Eugen Block Holding GmbH, Namibian beef producers and South Trade GmbH, with the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) acting as a facilitator.

According to the NIPDB, the deal is the outcome of a two-and-a-half-year process aimed at ensuring steady access for Namibian beef in the German food service sector.

Namibia is currently the only African country that is authorised to export beef to both the European Union and the United States, a position it has maintained by complying with strict animal health and food safety standards.

The meat is promoted internationally as free-range and grass-fed, raised on natural pastures, and produced under conditions that align with sustainable farming practices.

Through this agreement, Namibian beef has gained a foothold in one of Germany’s most established owner-managed hospitality companies, which operates a total of 47 steakhouses nationwide.

For Namibian producers, the arrangement is seen as an opportunity to secure consistent demand in a high-value market while creating additional channels for farmers, processors and exporters.

The NIPDB stated that promoting Namibian products abroad is part of its mandate to attract investment and expand the global presence of the country’s agricultural exports.

It added that cooperation with hospitality brands such as Block House strengthens the visibility of Namibia as a source of premium beef.

Valentin Külbs, managing director of South Trade GmbH, said the beef is distinguished not only by its quality but also by the way it is produced, with emphasis on animal welfare and environmental responsibility.

Markus Gutendorff, chief executive of Block House Restaurantbetriebe AG, explained that the decision to introduce Namibian beef is driven by the company’s strategy of offering its customers distinctive products with a clear story of origin.

He said the partnership reflects the restaurant group’s commitment to diversifying its menu options while meeting customer expectations for authenticity.
