MyriaMeat develops roe deer stem cell line for cultivated venison production

Company expands cell cultivation work beyond pork into specialty game meat applications

GERMANY – MyriaMeat has reported a new development in cultivated meat research after its scientists produced a pluripotent stem cell line from roe deer and differentiated it into muscle tissue using a proprietary method.

The company said the process marks its first generation of roe deer muscle cells from induced pluripotent stem cells, laying an early foundation for potential cultivated venison products such as fillets.

The achievement extends MyriaMeat’s work beyond cultivated pork and places the firm within a growing segment of the sector focused on high-value speciality meats.

The company added that the results suggest its stem cell platform can be adapted across multiple animal species to produce meat cells that replicate conventional meat structures.

Cultivated venison development

MyriaMeat stated that the current stage of work centres on producing authentic muscle cells for structured meat applications, with ongoing efforts to refine differentiation methods and analyse the new cell line.

Chief executive Florian Huettner said the results demonstrate that the platform is not restricted to a single species and that roe deer meat produced through cell culture is moving from concept into active development.

The Munich and Göttingen-based biotech firm noted that its approach builds on research conducted at the University of Göttingen and is designed to improve scalability in cultivated meat production using pluripotent stem cells.

Roe deer meat holds a limited but established place in European cuisine due to its flavour profile and restricted supply, and MyriaMeat said cultivated versions could reduce reliance on hunting and conventional livestock systems.

Industry outlook

Analysts tracking alternative proteins have identified premium and exotic meat categories as likely early entry points for cultivated meat companies due to higher price points and constrained supply chains.

Founded in 2022, MyriaMeat focuses on producing cultivated meat using pluripotent stem cell technology and aims to create whole-cut products without plant-based substitutes or structural fillers.

While commercial timelines for cultivated venison have not been defined, the company described the development of roe deer cells as an important step toward future structured game meat production.

The company indicated that further work will focus on scaling production processes, improving cell stability, and advancing toward structured cultivated venison cuts, although no commercial launch timeline has been disclosed.
