Fresmart, Arreiou expand supermarket networks as Angola retail sector grows

The openings come amid continued expansion in the country’s formal grocery retail segment.

ANGOLA – Fresmart has launched new supermarkets in Lobito in Benguela province and in Zango 8 Mil, increasing the Newaco Group subsidiary’s store count to more than 60 nationwide.

At the same time, discount chain Arreiou has opened additional branches in Simão Toco, Hoji Ya Henda, and Maculusso, lifting its total footprint to over 100 stores across Angola.

Angola’s retail sector continues to develop as one of the most active non-oil parts of the economy, with projections showing a compound annual growth rate of 7.3% between 2024 and 2030 driven by urban growth and rising household incomes.

The market remains split between formal retail outlets and informal trade, with informal channels such as street vendors, traditional markets, and small kiosks accounting for about 70% of food sales across the country.

Formal retail formats, including supermarkets, hypermarkets, and cash-and-carry stores, have been expanding in major cities as consumers increasingly shift toward packaged goods, wider product ranges, and more consistent quality standards.

Market Structure: Formal and Informal Retail

Within the organised segment, several large operators continue to shape competition as they expand store networks and adapt to shifting consumer demand patterns across urban and peri-urban areas.

Shoprite, the South African retailer, operates roughly 25 to 30 stores in Angola, while Kero Hypermarkets maintains a strong position with an estimated 40% share in some segments and a focus on bulk purchasing.

AngoMart runs dozens of outlets across multiple formats including hypermarkets and express stores, while Fresmart has grown to about 55 locations following its latest expansion in Luanda’s Samba district.

Other chains such as Maxi, Nosso Super, Bompreço, Continente, Nossa Casa, and Bem Barato, operated by the Carrinho group, also contribute to a competitive retail landscape dominated by Portuguese, South African, and locally backed operators, with ongoing expansion improving product availability and store standards.
