Canada commits over US$10 million to expand livestock processing in Saskatchewan

CANADA – The Canadian government has announced funding exceeding US$10 million for nine agricultural projects in Saskatchewan, with two livestock processing businesses set to receive investment aimed at increasing production capacity and supporting market growth.

The funding package includes support for North 49 Foods Ltd., which plans to expand its processing operations and pursue new export opportunities, while Prairie Meats Inc. will upgrade its facilities to increase food production for distribution across Saskatchewan and the rest of Canada.

The announcement was made in Langham, Saskatchewan, by Secretary of State for Rural Development Buckley Belanger on behalf of Prairies Economic Development Canada Minister Eleanor Olszewski, alongside International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu.

The government said the investments form part of broader efforts to strengthen rural industries, improve food processing capacity and create opportunities for agricultural businesses across the province.

Although funding allocations for the individual projects were not disclosed, the programme is expected to support business expansion, improve processing efficiency and help participating companies reach additional domestic and international markets.

Beef sector remains central to Canada’s livestock industry

The investment comes as Canada’s beef industry continues to play a significant role in the country’s agricultural economy, with approximately 11 million cattle managed across more than 60,000 beef operations nationwide.

Western Canada remains the country’s main cattle production region, with Alberta and Saskatchewan accounting for the largest herd sizes and collectively finishing around 78% of Canada’s fed cattle.

Canada produces about 2% of the world’s beef supply and exports between 45% and 52% of its beef and cattle production, with the United States receiving nearly 75.7% of total exports.

Recent industry data show annual beef production of approximately 3.49 billion pounds, while cattle and calf cash receipts reached US$16.8 billion, reflecting continued demand despite challenges including elevated feed costs and drought conditions in western provinces.

The cattle and beef sector contributes more than US$41 billion annually to Canada’s gross domestic product and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs across farming, processing, transportation and related industries.

The latest investment is expected to strengthen processing infrastructure in Saskatchewan while supporting value addition, export development and the long-term competitiveness of Canada’s livestock sector.
