Alexandria Port records 82 million tonnes of cargo throughput in FY2025/26

EGYPT – Alexandria Port has recorded its highest-ever cargo-handling volumes during fiscal year (FY) 2025/26, with total cargo throughput exceeding 82 million tonnes, reflecting continued improvements in port infrastructure, operational efficiency and logistics services, according to Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir.

The minister said cargo volumes rose by 10% to 74.8 million tonnes in FY2024/25, marking the port’s strongest annual performance on record. Dry bulk cargo recorded the fastest growth across all cargo categories, up 19.3% year on year to 36.5 million tonnes, compared with 30.6 million tonnes in the previous fiscal year.

Containerized cargo also posted robust growth, rising 11% to approximately 28.3 million tonnes from 25.5 million tonnes, while liquid bulk cargo reached 10.3 million tonnes, up 1%.

Container traffic also expanded significantly, with Alexandria Port handling 2.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the fiscal year, a 13% increase compared with FY2024/25.

Strategic Vision and Infrastructure Modernization

This surge in activity is marked by a significant rise in dry bulk and containerized goods, alongside a substantial increase in maritime tourism and vessel traffic.

Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir attributes these successes to infrastructure modernization and the implementation of digital management systems to boost operational efficiency.

Alongside higher cargo volumes, vessel traffic reached a record level, with the Alexandria Port Authority receiving 7,026 vessels in FY2025/26.

Cruise ship traffic recorded the strongest growth among vessel categories, up nearly 54% year on year. Ferry traffic increased by 25.7%, while dry bulk vessel calls rose 21.5% to 1,605 ships, an increase of 284 vessels compared with the previous fiscal year.

Maritime Tourism and Operational Efficiency

Liquid bulk vessel traffic grew by 11.8%, while container ship calls increased 6.5% to 2,418 vessels. Maritime tourism also posted strong growth, with passenger arrivals increasing by more than 70% to exceed 82,000 visitors during the fiscal year.

Al-Wazir said the results demonstrate the Alexandria Port Authority’s ability to handle rising trade volumes and maritime activity, while reinforcing the port’s position as a strategic logistics hub on the Mediterranean.

These improvements have reduced vessel turnaround times and enhanced the port’s capacity to handle global trade volumes.

Ultimately, the document presents these achievements as a vital step towards Egypt’s strategic goal of establishing itself as a premier international logistics hub by 2030, while pursuing infrastructure developments to sustain long-term growth in the maritime sector.
