Diageo opens US$415M Montgomery facility to boost North America

Diageo launches a $415 million facility in Alabama, enhancing supply chain efficiency, sustainability, and job creation while strengthening its North America manufacturing and distribution network.

USA – Diageo North America has officially opened a new 360,000-square-foot manufacturing and warehousing facility in Montgomery, strengthening its supply chain capabilities across the Southern United States.

The site, known as Diageo Montgomery, is strategically positioned within the company’s Southern U.S. region and is designed to enhance operational resilience, improve distribution efficiency, and support sustainability goals.

With a multi-million case annual production capacity, the facility brings the company’s beverage alcohol portfolio closer to key markets.

“The opening of Diageo Montgomery marks an important step forward in building the agile, future-ready supply network that our business demands,” said Marsha McIntosh, President of North America Supply at Diageo.

“By placing this facility at the heart of the southern region, we’re not only strengthening our connection to customers, but also setting a new standard for efficient, sustainable manufacturing.”

She added, “This site reflects our long-term commitment to accelerating innovation, ensuring our iconic brands reach consumers with greater speed and significantly lower environmental impact, and investing in local communities.”

The facility incorporates several advanced manufacturing technologies designed to improve efficiency while reducing environmental impact. These include five automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that transport pallets across the site, minimising manual handling and reducing forklift-related emissions.

High-speed bottling lines equipped with advanced rinsing and inspection systems have been installed to improve accuracy and increase production flexibility.

The site also uses energy-efficient infrastructure powered by electric boilers for sanitation and bottle-filling operations, supported by a battery energy storage system for backup power.

In addition, real-time water and energy monitoring systems have been integrated to provide visibility into resource consumption, enabling data-driven decisions that support sustainability objectives.

The facility benefits from strong transport connectivity, including access to road and rail networks, which helps reduce transportation distances and associated carbon emissions.

Kay Ivey, Governor of Alabama, highlighted the broader economic impact of the investment. “Diageo’s continued investment in Montgomery is a strong testament to Alabama’s ability to attract and retain world-class companies,” she said.

“This facility not only brings quality jobs to our state, but also strengthens our position as a leader in manufacturing and global commerce. We are proud to support Diageo’s growth and the lasting impact it will have on our communities.”

The US$415 million project is expected to employ around 100 full-time staff, while supporting approximately 750 jobs during construction.

Diageo has also invested US$750,000 in educational initiatives across Alabama, supporting institutions such as Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, and Tuskegee University through scholarships and financial aid programmes.
