Heineken Ethiopia expands premium beer segment with launch of Desperados

Heineken Ethiopia introduces Desperados beer, investing nearly 500 million birr to target premium urban consumers with a flavoured lager offering a tequila-inspired taste experience.

ETHIOPIA – Heineken Ethiopia has introduced Desperados to the Ethiopian market following an investment of close to 500 million birr, as the brewer strengthens its premium portfolio.

Speaking during the launch event, Managing Director Bart De Keninck said the company invested “close to half a billion birr,” primarily to acquire a flavouring machine required for local production.

The company stated that the rollout will initially target urban centres and nightlife venues, reflecting rising demand for premium and differentiated beverage offerings in Ethiopia’s fast-growing beer market.

Desperados, which has an alcohol content of 5.9 percent, is positioned as a lager with a Latin-inspired profile. The product is characterised by agave-derived flavouring, designed to deliver a tequila-like taste without incorporating traditional spirits, creating a cocktail-style drinking experience.

Corporate Affairs Director Nigus Alemu described the product as offering “a bold alternative within the premium beer segment, one that celebrates social connections and encourages people to break away from the ordinary.”

Part of Heineken’s global portfolio, Desperados is available in more than 50 countries across Europe, Latin America, Africa and parts of Asia, making it one of the company’s most widely distributed flavoured beers.

Heineken Ethiopia said the product will be priced approximately five birr above its flagship Heineken brand, positioning it slightly higher within the premium category.

Ethiopia’s beer industry has attracted sustained investment in recent years, supported by population growth and urbanisation. Brewers have increasingly diversified their portfolios beyond standard lagers to tap into higher-margin segments.

Heineken Ethiopia entered the market in 2011 through the acquisition of Harar and Bedele breweries and later expanded with the Kilinto Brewery near Addis Ababa.

The company now operates multiple production sites and manages a portfolio of more than eight brands across various segments.
