Impossible Foods CEO Peter McGuinness to step down after four years

The company’s executive leadership team will temporarily take over day-to-day operations.

USA – Impossible Foods confirmed that McGuinness will step down as CEO, with his duties transferred to the company’s three-member leadership team consisting of Jason Gao, chief legal and operating officer, Meredith Madden, chief demand officer, and Robert Haas, chief supply officer.

The company described the leadership change as a transition occurring while the business remains strong and stated that McGuinness will continue to serve on its board of directors.

During McGuinness’s tenure, Impossible Foods grew its US market share and became the second-largest plant-based protein brand in the country, outperforming the broader plant-based sector.

The period under his leadership included product development, expanded retail and foodservice distribution, and a shift in branding to appeal to a broader audience beyond dedicated plant-based consumers.

Board member Fedele Bauccio said the company is well-positioned for continued market presence and expressed confidence in the leadership team to manage the next phase of growth.

McGuinness guided Impossible Foods through a transition from a tech-focused startup to a mainstream food brand, emphasising meat-like taste, inclusivity, and accessibility to reach flexitarian and meat-eating audiences.

The company also implemented new packaging and brand strategies and strengthened partnerships with retailers and foodservice operators through merchandising, menu development, and marketing campaigns.

Earlier this month, Impossible Foods announced a partnership with food-tech start-up Equii to diversify into high-protein, grain-based products, including hamburger and hot dog buns, signalling expansion beyond its original plant-based meat range.

McGuinness said the company had invested in growth and sustainability over the last four years and expressed confidence that the executive team would continue to guide the business and the category forward.

Founded in 2011, Impossible Foods manufactures plant-based beef, chicken, and pork alternatives and distributes products across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East.
