JDE Peet’s launches TNFD-aligned Nature Transition Plan to protect biodiversity and secure future coffee supply

JDE Peet’s unveils a science-based nature plan to strengthen farmer resilience and safeguard global coffee ecosystems.

NETHERLANDS – JDE Peet’s, the world’s largest pure-play coffee company, has unveiled its Nature Transition Plan, titled Grounded in Nature, setting out a science-based roadmap to protect ecosystems, strengthen farmer resilience, and secure the long-term sustainability of global coffee production.

The company said the publication makes JDE Peet’s the first food and beverage business globally to launch a nature transition plan fully aligned with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework, as well as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Science-Based Targets for Nature (SBTN).

According to JDE Peet’s, the plan translates sustainability commitments into measurable and time-bound actions designed to ensure coffee supply chains contribute to nature-positive outcomes, while maintaining sourcing diversity across all coffee-growing regions.

The Nature Transition Plan builds on nearly a decade of work under the company’s Common Grounds sustainability program, which has reached close to one million coffee farmers since its launch in 2015.

Under the new roadmap, JDE Peet’s aims to expand the adoption of regenerative coffee farming practices across an additional 200,000 hectares by 2030.

The company also stated that it plans to move toward sourcing 100% of its green coffee responsibly by 2028, building on a reported achievement of 83.2% responsibly sourced green coffee in 2024. JDE Peet’s had previously set a target of reaching 100% responsibly sourced green coffee by 2025.

Laurent Sagarra, Vice President of Engagement at JDE Peet’s, said: “Without nature there is no coffee. Nature-related risks are no longer distant threats – they are here, now, impacting coffee farmers and supply chains worldwide.”

He added: “Our Nature Transition Plan is both a clear roadmap, and a call to action for the coffee industry to work together with governments, NGOs and coffee farmers to bend the curve on biodiversity loss and secure the future of coffee. By protecting nature, we protect coffee, communities and the shared future of our industry.”

JDE Peet’s said its Grounded in Nature supply chain transition plan will be embedded within its broader corporate sustainability strategy and aligned with multiple third-party frameworks, including TNFD, the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Science Based Targets Network.

The announcement comes amid wider industry efforts to advance regenerative agriculture.

Recently, Rainforest Alliance said a distinct regenerative seal for coffee is expected to begin appearing on consumer packaging in 2026, while Nestlé-owned Nespresso has announced plans to bring Rainforest Alliance Certified Regenerative coffee to market.

JDE Peet’s estimates that it currently purchases around 8% of the world’s green coffee.
