Kenya’s beverage industry urged to embrace sustainable packaging as demand and exports surge

Industry leaders highlight the need for innovative packaging to boost profits and reduce environmental impact amid sector growth.

KENYA – Kenya’s beverage industry is being called upon to adopt innovative, efficient, and sustainable packaging solutions to meet rising consumer demand and minimize environmental impact.

Speaking at the Drinktec 2025 conference in Nairobi, Joseph Nyongesa, CEO of the Institute of Packaging Professionals Kenya, emphasized the critical role packaging plays in ensuring products reach consumers safely.

He urged stakeholders to regularly review their packaging protocols to remain competitive and environmentally responsible.

Nyongesa also cautioned against exporting unpackaged products, stating that this practice deprives Kenyan producers of potential profits.

“Packaging is not just about protection; it is a value addition that can significantly enhance returns for local businesses,” he noted.

The global beverage market continues to expand, with a 2024 Euromonitor report valuing the sector at 2.6 trillion euros.

Daniel Dellemann, project manager at the International Market, Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers Association (VDMA), highlighted Kenya as one of the fastest-growing beverage markets worldwide.

He pointed out that increased production must be matched with advancements in packaging to maintain growth momentum.

The conference provided a platform for industry participants to explore new technologies and network with global players.

Meanwhile, Euromonitor data from 2024 shows that Kenyan imports of food and packaging machinery reached 139 million euros, marking a nearly 10 percent increase from the previous year.

In a move to further support the sector, the government recently waived taxes on packaging materials for the tea industry, aiming to boost farmer productivity and enhance value addition.
