Maple Leaf Foods completes pork business spinoff

Canada Packers begins trading on TSX under symbol CPKR

CANADA – Maple Leaf Foods Inc. has completed the separation of its pork division, creating Canada Packers Inc. as a standalone company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Trading of Canada Packers common shares began on October 2, 2025 under the ticker symbol CPKR, following the conclusion of the transaction.

Curtis Frank, chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Foods, said the move allows the company to focus on its packaged goods segment, highlighting the importance of aligning operations with consumer demand for sustainable protein.

In his remarks, Dennis Organ, chief executive officer of Canada Packers, said the new company will operate independently and concentrate on producing and exporting premium pork to markets around the world.

Michael McCain, who serves as executive chair of both companies, described the decision as a milestone for Canadian business and emphasized that both Maple Leaf Foods and Canada Packers will continue to operate with distinct investment goals.

As part of the agreement, Maple Leaf Foods will keep a 16 percent stake in Canada Packers, while also entering a long-term supply arrangement in which it will source pork from the new company for its prepared meats portfolio.

The relationship between the two firms ensures Maple Leaf Foods retains access to raw materials while Canada Packers secures a steady buyer as it builds its own growth strategy.

However, shareholders of Canada Packers may experience delays in receiving Direct Registration System statements due to the ongoing Canada Post workers’ strike that has disrupted normal mail services.
