Midwest Poultry Services recalls nearly 1.6 million egg cartons over salmonella concerns
The company said no illnesses have been reported and has suspended shipments from the affected Texas farms.
USA – Midwest Poultry Services has recalled nearly 1.6 million cartons of shell eggs after concerns that the products may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recall covers white shell and brown cage free shell eggs produced at the company’s farms in Texas and distributed between 6 June and 3 July to retailers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
The affected eggs carry sell by or best by dates ranging from 20 July to 17 August and were marketed under several brands, including Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, Country Morning and Sunups.
Retail distribution included Kroger and Brookshire Grocery stores in Louisiana and Texas, while Brookshire Grocery stores also sold the recalled products in Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
The FDA said the eggs were also supplied to other smaller retail outlets, adding that no other products manufactured by Midwest Poultry Services are included in the recall.
Company halts shipments from affected farms
Midwest Poultry Services said the potential contamination was identified through routine environmental monitoring and a root cause investigation conducted at its two Texas egg production facilities.
Following the findings, the company suspended distribution of fresh eggs produced at the affected farms while corrective measures are implemented.
The company stated that no illnesses linked to the recalled eggs have been reported.
Salmonella Enteritidis can cause serious infections, particularly among young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, while healthy individuals may experience symptoms including fever, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
The FDA has advised consumers not to consume the recalled eggs and instead return them to the retailer where they were purchased to receive a full refund.
The agency has also published a complete list of the affected products to help consumers identify eggs included in the recall.
