Scotch Whisky Association appoints Rita Greenwood as first female Chair

William Grant & Sons executive Rita Greenwood takes leadership of the SWA Council during a challenging global trading environment.

SCOTLAND – The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has appointed Rita Greenwood, chief investment officer at William Grant & Sons, as the new chair of the SWA Council, marking a historic milestone for the industry.

Greenwood becomes the first female chair in the association’s 114-year history and will serve a two-year term leading the council, which comprises 16 representatives from SWA member companies.

The council plays a central role in setting the strategic direction and policy priorities of the Scotch whisky sector.

Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the industry as Scotch whisky producers contend with global trade pressures, tariff uncertainty, regulatory changes and the accelerating transition towards more sustainable operating models.

According to data released by the SWA, the value of Scotch whisky exports declined by 3.7% to £5.4 billion (US$6.7 billion) in 2024 compared with 2023.

However, export volumes rose by 3.9%, a trend the association said reflects shifting consumer preferences alongside a “challenging trading environment”.

Welcoming the appointment, SWA chief executive Mark Kent highlighted Greenwood’s experience and strategic expertise. “Rita’s expertise in commercial excellence and strategy will be crucial as we navigate a challenging period for the Scotch whisky industry,” Kent said.

“Scotch whisky is being significantly impacted by multiple headwinds both here at home and in our global markets, but the industry is focused on overcoming these challenges and delivering long-term sustainable growth.”

Greenwood has been a member of the William Grant & Sons executive board since 2017 and brings 23 years of experience in the Scotch whisky industry to the role. She becomes the 24th chair of the SWA Council.

Commenting on her appointment, Greenwood said she was honoured to take on the role at a critical time for the sector.

“I am proud to take on the role of chair at such an important moment for the Scotch whisky industry,” she said. “The SWA is vital in representing our collective interests, in championing the sector as we face immediate challenges and unlocking long-term growth opportunities.”

She added: “Scotch whisky has a remarkable global reputation and makes a significant economic contribution, but members face a challenging global market at present, so it is more important than ever that we continue to raise its profile.”

Greenwood’s appointment underscores the SWA’s focus on strong leadership as the industry seeks to navigate near-term pressures while positioning itself for sustainable growth in global markets.
