SPAR opens first Gourmet store at Zimbali Oasis, South Africa

SOUTH AFRICA – SPAR has introduced its first SPAR Gourmet outlet at the Zimbali Oasis on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, marking a new step in the retailer’s premium format strategy.

The launch was delivered in partnership with independent retailer Mark Anderson, who has more than four decades of experience operating SPAR stores.

The company said the concept was developed through close collaboration between the national support office and Anderson’s team to create a higher-end grocery environment for the region.

SPAR explained that the Gourmet format is positioned around specialty food counters, a curated bakery selection, and prepared meals, catering to consumers seeking convenience and quality in one location.

The store also features a dedicated butchery with specialised cuts, as well as a wine section offering a broader choice for shoppers.

SPAR’s national PR, Communications and Sponsorships Manager, Mpudi Maubane, said the opening represents a shift toward more experience-driven retail concepts within the group.

He added that Zimbali Oasis was selected for the debut because it aligns with the new format’s target market.

SPAR noted that the rollout of the Gourmet store supports its broader plan to grow its premium offering while maintaining its independent retailer model.

The company said it believes this approach enables stores to adapt to local preferences while keeping pace with global retail trends.

Launch activities included product tastings and demonstrations to give visitors a preview of what the new concept intends to offer daily.

Maubane said the aim is for the store to become a destination where shoppers can explore specialty items and interact with food in a way that differs from traditional supermarkets.

Walmart expands South African footprint

The launch of SPAR Gourmet comes as Walmart moves ahead with its own expansion, with the US retailer opening its second South African store at Fourways Mall in Johannesburg.

The Fourways outlet follows the opening of Walmart’s first local store at Clearwater Mall, which the company said drew strong interest in imported goods.

The new store is set to open in November 2025 and will operate under store manager Lunghani Lincoln Mathebula.

Walmart said the branch has created 80 permanent jobs, including opportunities for young entrants to the labour market.

The retailer confirmed that many of the Clearwater store’s top selling products will also be available at Fourways, including imported soft drinks and confectionery.

Premium meat items such as Sparta marbled sirloin and Deli Co lamb products will also be stocked alongside collectible toys and branded merchandise.

Customers within a five-kilometre radius will be able to arrange deliveries through the Walmart Africa app.

Walmart’s move marks the first time the company is operating stores in South Africa under its own name after years of activity through Massmart, which it fully acquired in 2022.

The retailer has adopted its global everyday low price strategy for the new outlets, which were recently compared by BusinessTech in a multi retailer price analysis.
