Walmart to open second store in South Africa at Fourways Mall

The retailer expands its presence with a new store less than a week after its first South African outlet.

SOUTH AFRICA – Walmart is set to open its second South African store at Fourways Mall in Johannesburg.

The opening follows the launch of the retailer’s first outlet at Clearwater Mall just days earlier.

The Fourways store will begin operations at 08h00 on November 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by store manager Lunghani Lincoln Mathebula.

Walmart said the new location has created 80 permanent positions, including roles for young first-time job seekers.

The company described the Clearwater Mall debut as a success, citing strong customer turnout and high demand for imported products.

Many of the top-selling items at Clearwater Mall will be available at Fourways from the first day.

These include imported soft drinks like Fanta Strawberry, Fanta Peach, and Dr Pepper, along with American snacks such as Pop-Tarts, Swedish Fish, Nerds, and Sour Patch Kids.

Premium meat selections, including Sparta marbled sirloin steaks and Deli-Co lamb lollies, will also be on sale.

Collectors can expect Walmart-exclusive Fuggler plush toys and Hot Wheels products, including the 80th Anniversary Kombi model.

Customers can preview available products and arrange deliveries within 60 minutes via the Walmart Africa app if they live within 5 km of the store.

This expansion represents the first fully branded Walmart stores in South Africa, despite the company’s long-standing operations through Massmart.

Walmart acquired 51% of Massmart in 2010, completed full ownership in 2022, and subsequently delisted the company from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Following challenges with Massmart’s retail chains, particularly Game, Walmart announced in September 2025 that it would open its own stores in the country.

The rollout introduces Walmart’s global strategy of everyday low prices to South African consumers.

The new stores carry a wide range of products, from groceries and fresh food to household goods, clothing, electronics, toys, sports equipment, and seasonal items.

The retailer said the pricing approach focuses on keeping costs consistently low rather than offering short-term promotions.

Andrea Albright, Walmart International’s executive vice president, said the first South African store launch aimed to deliver customers a reliable low-cost option for essential products.

BusinessTech compared the price of a standard basket of goods across five South African retailers, finding Walmart the cheapest at roughly US$19.70, about US$2.70 lower than the next cheapest, SPAR, and nearly US$4.30 below Woolworths.

Prices can vary depending on region or store, and cheaper alternatives may be available, but Walmart’s pricing strategy signals an effort to attract cost-conscious shoppers.
