French retail chain Géant launches in Aden Mall, targeting high-end consumers

YEMEN – The first Géant hypermarket in Yemen has officially opened its doors in Aden, occupying a flagship location within Aden Mall.
The new store is managed by HSA Group, also known as Hayel Saeed Anam & Co, a conglomerate founded in Yemen but headquartered in Dubai.
Géant, a subsidiary of France’s Casino Group, already operates in Tunisia, Libya, Djibouti, Egypt, and the UAE, and has previously had outlets in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.
The Aden branch will serve as the anchor tenant of the mall, covering approximately 5,500 square meters and catering primarily to wealthier shoppers.
It will stock Casino’s private-label products alongside international brands and Yemeni goods, while offering specialized counters for bakery items, ready meals, honey, nuts, fish, and meat.
Hayel Saeed Anam & Co was established in Yemen in 1938 and has grown into a multi-sector company with operations in manufacturing and distribution.
The group is a leading local producer of fast-moving consumer goods, including edible oils, dairy products, biscuits, confectionery, flour, and sugar, and it owns Aden Mall, which it developed in 2006.
Yemen’s retail industry has faced fluctuations due to ongoing economic instability, conflict, and currency depreciation, which have heavily influenced the food retail sector.
The country relies on imports for 80 to 90% of its food supply, and infrastructure gaps and low consumer purchasing power continue to restrict market growth.
While exact figures for Yemen’s food retail sector in 2025 are scarce, projections indicate modest expansion through 2031, driven by population growth and urbanization.
In the wider Middle East, the retail market reached an estimated US$809.21 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to US$868.69 billion in 2025, with the food, beverage, and grocery segment accounting for 47.3% of total sales due to ongoing demand for essential goods.
