Local retailer collaborates with SPAR Lambrechts to modernize operations

BELGIUM – The SPAR supermarket in Vlimmeren, Belgium, has resumed operations following a two-month renovation led in partnership with SPAR Lambrechts, one of the country’s licensed SPAR operators.
The updated store includes a revamped butchery, a distinct brand for meat and catering offerings, and new self-checkout lanes intended to streamline customer transactions.
The store is managed by local retailer Stef Nuyts, whose family has operated in Vlimmeren since 1992, initially opening the outlet under the management of Stef’s father and sister, Linda.
The Nuyts family has maintained a partnership with SPAR Lambrechts since 2000, citing it as a key element in running their store efficiently.
Stef Nuyts stated that working with SPAR Lambrechts allows the family to make operational decisions independently while receiving support for broader planning and implementation.
SPAR Lambrechts coordinated the full renovation, shaping the store layout and design according to the Nuyts family’s specifications within a timeframe of less than two months.
The butchery received a major update with all meat products now pre-packaged, while the charcuterie counter continues to provide service directly to customers.
To create a clear connection between the store’s meat and catering sections, SPAR Lambrechts and the Nuyts family introduced the Atelier Nuyts brand, featuring a new logo integrated with the SPAR identity.
Communication of the changes included a reopening brochure, targeted local messaging, and updates on social media to inform the customer base.
Self-scan checkouts were installed, increasing the total from two to four lanes, three of which allow customer self-service under cashier supervision to reduce waiting times.
Stef Nuyts highlighted that the introduction of self-checkout lanes improved efficiency and reinforced the support provided by SPAR Lambrechts in store management.
SPAR Lambrechts offers a range of services to independent Belgian retailers, including business planning, financial advice, guidance on daily operations, and recommendations for product assortments tailored to local demand.
The operator also advises on shop layout to improve workflow and customer experience, aiming to support store operations across the country.
SPAR has been present in Belgium since 1947 and operates through two main businesses: Retail Partners, part of the Colruyt Group, and the family-run SPAR Lambrechts, which focuses on independently managed stores.
