Sun World launches global mango program with Blyde Late variety extending season

Sun World’s breeding strategy prioritizes flavour, appearance, shelf life, and long-seasonality, paired with high productivity.

UNITED STATES – Sun World International has launched its global mango program, showcasing extended seasonality led by the extremely late-maturing Blyde Late variety.

To begin with, outside South Africa, Blyde Late remains on the market into May, while traditional varieties taper off, offering growers and retailers a longer supply window.

Bernardo Calvo, President and CEO of Sun World International, explained the strategic value. “Blyde Late allows our partners to stay in the market longer, even when others are already out. That’s a meaningful shift, and it reflects our broader goal of creating a more consistent, reliable mango category through innovation.”

Therefore, for investors, late-maturing genetics provide a competitive edge by extending commercial availability beyond competitors’ seasons. The commercial benefits of Blyde Late include strong yield potential, large fruit, and high sugar content.

In addition, at full maturity, it extends the mango season well beyond traditional windows, offering retailers new opportunities to maintain momentum during a historically underserved period.

Sun World’s partnership with Mission Produce disrupts traditional supply chains by integrating breeding, commercialization, and global partnerships.

The collaboration strengthens Sun World’s ability to scale its mango portfolio through an established global sourcing and distribution platform.

Sun World hosted three field days for South African growers and international marketers, giving partners first-hand access to its commercial mango offerings.

Gerardo Lugo, Chief Commercial Officer at Sun World, emphasized the advantage. “It’s not just about having great fruit but having great quality for an extended period of time. With Blyde Late, we’re helping our partners capture value in a part of the season that historically has been underserved. That’s where real commercial advantage starts to take shape.”

Sun World’s breeding strategy prioritizes flavour, appearance, shelf life, and long-seasonality, paired with high productivity.

Moreover, the company’s mango pipeline includes multiple commercial varieties, advanced selections in global trials, and a growing footprint across key production regions.

Sun World is building a program that connects breeding, commercialization, and global partnerships in a way never done in mangoes, with a clear focus on delivering better fruit more consistently throughout the entire season.
