Sydney’s new fish market draws over 230,000 visitors in first week

Expansion projects and upgraded facilities aim to improve access and public engagement.

AUSTRALIA – Sydney’s new fish market recorded more than 230,000 visitors and sold over 160 tonnes of seafood through its auction, trading, and retail operations in its first week.

The New South Wales government developed the market, which is projected to attract more than six million visitors annually.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, said the first week’s figures show strong interest from both local residents and tourists.

Minister for Lands and Property, Steve Kamper, added that the initial turnout provides confidence that the market will exceed the expected visitor numbers in its first year.

The market offers more retail space than the previous location, hosting 40 food and retail operators, ranging from takeaway shops to waterfront restaurants.

The precinct comprises 6,000 square metres of public space, including a water-play feature, art installations, and a waterfront promenade.

Public transport to the market is being upgraded, with additional light rail services now in operation and future plans including a new ferry wharf, enhancements to the Wentworth Park light rail, and the Pyrmont metro extension.

Sydney Fish Market CEO Daniel Jarosch noted that the market provides a wider range of seafood, dining, and retail experiences for both daily shoppers and visitors seeking a waterfront outing.

The state government has partnered with Mirvac to redevelop the former fish market site at Blackwattle Bay, with the project set to deliver 1,400 homes, 2.6 hectares of public space, and a new promenade.

The redevelopment will also complete a 15-kilometre foreshore walk connecting Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo.
