Rite Foods clears 40 tons of plastic waste in Lagos  

NIGERIA – Rite Foods Limited has announced the successful removal of 40 tons of plastic waste from Lagos during the 2025 Plastic Free July campaign, reinforcing its commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. 

The initiative was driven by its Riteonthebeach project in partnership with Pop Beach Club, an eco-resort in Lagos, with support from the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).  

The campaign featured community engagement activities at the Ikeja City Mall and saw the distribution of over 30,000 recovery bags, enabling residents to collect and recycle plastics. 

This large-scale mobilization builds on the company’s ongoing beach clean-up exercises, aimed at reducing plastic pollution and advancing a circular economy. 

Rite Foods Managing Director, Seleem Adegunwa, revealed that employees of the company actively participated by sorting and returning plastics. In July alone, 288kg of post-consumer PET bottles were recovered, resulting in an environmental saving of 293.76kg CO₂-equivalent emissions. 

“This result reinforces our belief that collective and consistent actions yield lasting impact. Riteonthebeach is a lifestyle change that supports Lagos State’s vision for a sustainable, clean, and healthy environment,” Adegunwa stated. 

Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, Ekuma Eze, emphasized the company’s responsibility for its product life cycle. He noted that the Plastic Free July campaign demonstrated the effectiveness of collaborative solutions, involving communities, businesses, and government. 

“Every bottle recovered is one less hazard to our waterways, biodiversity, and climate. Plastic is not the problem, improper disposal is, and we are leading the charge for a sustainable solution through our Riteonthebeach initiative,” Eze said. 

Pop Beach Club convener, Akin Disu, highlighted that the collaboration has resulted in the collection of thousands of tons of plastic from Lagos shorelines.  

Beyond clean-ups, the partnership supports job creation and educational programs, including back-to-school initiatives funded through proceeds from recycled plastics.
