FSSAI opens licensing window for Ayurveda Aahara products on FoSCoS portal

INDIA – The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has rolled out a dedicated licensing and registration window for Ayurveda Aahara products on its Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal, marking a significant milestone in the formalisation of the Ayurvedic food sector.

The initiative, operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, will allow manufacturers across India to apply for licences to produce and market Ayurveda Aahara seamlessly. 

For the first time, the Food Business Operator (FBO) community has a separate “Kind of Business” (KoB) category specifically for these products, ensuring that traditional formulations drawn from authoritative Ayurvedic texts are aligned with modern food safety and quality standards.

Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine with roots in India dating back over 3,000 years, places a strong emphasis on diet, balance, and preventive health. Its dietary principles are widely practiced across the country, making Ayurvedic foods a common feature in households and wellness routines. 

By embedding these foods within a formal regulatory framework, FSSAI aims to safeguard both authenticity and consumer trust while extending its reach to broader markets.

Officials emphasised that the regulation is rooted in Ayurveda’s principle of personalised nutrition, which prescribes dietary choices tailored to an individual’s constitution, or prakriti. 

Standardising such formulations is expected to preserve authenticity while also establishing Ayurveda Aahara as a regulated extension of prescribed treatment plans, thereby helping to bridge traditional knowledge with contemporary health practices.

To facilitate a smooth transition, the FSSAI has released a list of 91 approved Ayurveda Aahara recipes, dated July 25, 2025. 

This pre-approved set of formulations is intended to provide food business operators with clarity and guidance in product development. 

By ensuring both authenticity and regulatory compliance, the reference list is expected to minimise uncertainty during the licensing process and encourage greater industry participation.

Industry experts note that the move is likely to stimulate growth and innovation within both the food and Ayurveda sectors. 

A regulated pathway for Ayurveda Aahara products is anticipated to expand consumer access to safe, authentic, and standardised Ayurvedic foods while boosting market opportunities for manufacturers.

The framework has been developed in close coordination with the Ministry of Ayush, underscoring the government’s broader vision of integrating traditional wisdom with scientific regulation. Authorities believe the dual approach will benefit public health outcomes and strengthen consumer trust in Ayurveda-based nutrition.

The licensing and registration facility for Ayurveda Aahara products is now live on the FoSCoS portal. The official order listing the approved recipes can be accessed directly through the FSSAI website.
