Oman’s aquaculture output hits 9,240 Tons in 2025 – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources
Production grows sharply, with exports targeting major international markets and investment projects underway.
OMAN – Aquaculture production in Oman reached roughly 9,240 tons in 2025, a rise of 67.7% from the previous year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.
The total value of aquaculture output surpassed US$52.7 million (RO 20.3 million), a 63.7% increase from 2024.
Dr Issa Mohammed Al Farsi, Director of the Aquaculture Development Department, said whiteleg shrimp and European seabream are the primary species produced, followed by tilapia, Omani abalone, and rock oysters.
He added that the government has introduced a structured plan to develop the aquaculture sector in line with Oman Vision 2040, focusing on quality standards, environmental sustainability, community participation, and national food security.
The strategy also aims to support income diversification and increase non-oil contributions to the country’s GDP.
Al Farsi explained that entrepreneurs are encouraged to adopt integrated aquaculture systems, which combine fish farming with plant cultivation to reduce water use and emissions, with financing available for up to 80% of project costs through the Development Bank and other institutions.
Additional backing comes from a legislative framework and innovation programs, including the “Suggest Your Project” platform, designed to engage young entrepreneurs in the aquaculture sector.
Omani aquaculture products are being prepared for export to markets including the European Union, China, South Korea, Russia, and GCC and Arab countries, with compliance verified through Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification and laboratory testing by the Food Safety and Quality Center.
Investment activity in the sector is increasing, with construction beginning in February 2025 on a whiteleg shrimp farming facility in Shinas, North Al Batinah Governorate, for US$61 million (RO 23.5 million).
The project spans 15 hectares and is projected to produce about 7,500 tons of shrimp per year, making it one of the largest aquaculture operations in Oman.
Officials say the facility is expected to expand Oman’s presence in the regional seafood market and contribute to the country’s broader aquaculture output.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources continues to monitor production growth and export readiness while promoting sustainable practices in line with national development goals.
