Senegal poultry sector expands under WPF and Couvoir Amar partnership

POULTRY – Senegal’s poultry sector is expanding as the World Poultry Foundation (WPF), in partnership with World Poultry Foundation and local hatchery operator Couvoir Amar, is rolling out coordinated programs designed to improve production systems, increase access to quality inputs and strengthen farmer support services across multiple regions of the country through the Poultry Market Initiative.

The initiative, implemented under the Poultry Market Initiative (PMI), aims to reinforce poultry value chains by improving coordination between producers, hatcheries and input suppliers, while also supporting food security objectives and raising household incomes through more efficient and structured poultry production systems.

A major development reported under the program is increased production and distribution of day-old chicks, driven by expanding hatchery capacity that is helping meet rising demand from farmers transitioning toward more organized and commercially oriented poultry farming practices.

Improved access to stronger and more consistent day-old chicks is being linked to better flock performance, lower mortality rates and higher output of both meat and eggs across smallholder and commercial production systems in different parts of the country.

The poultry industry has become an increasingly important component of Senegal’s rural economy, supporting household livelihoods and generating employment opportunities while also sustaining related sectors such as feed manufacturing, veterinary services, transport and distribution networks.

Alongside production improvements, WPF and Couvoir Amar have expanded field-based support services that include farmer training and extension visits focused on vaccination schedules, feeding programs, housing systems, disease prevention and general flock management practices.

The initiative is also improving coordination across hatcheries, input suppliers, farmers and markets, with Couvoir Amar expanding production capacity while maintaining stable chick supply and supporting regional farmer networks, and further growth is expected as implementation continues across the sector.

Stakeholders expect continued expansion of poultry production capacity and farmer participation as the program develops further, with ongoing collaboration between development partners, local operators and farmers viewed as a key factor in sustaining long-term growth and improving the efficiency of Senegal’s poultry value chain.

The broader outcome of these interventions is a gradual shift toward a more integrated poultry sector in Senegal where improved inputs, technical support and market access are increasingly aligned, creating conditions that support rural income generation, stronger local supply chains and more stable availability of poultry products for domestic consumption.
