Egypt exports 165,000 tonnes of food in weekly trade as onions, strawberries lead shipments

EGYPT – Egypt successfully distributed 165,000 tonnes of diverse food commodities to roughly 200 global destinations during the week of July 18–24, 2026, with onions and strawberries emerging as the most prominent selections in the vegetable and fruit categories.

The shipments were handled by 1,195 exporting companies and included around 665 food products, spanning vegetables, tubers, fruits, flour and grain products, processed fruit and vegetable products, and other food items.

Fruit exports totalled 30,000 tonnes across 36 varieties, led by strawberries with 10,000 tonnes, followed by citrus fruits at 7,000 tonnes and grapes at 6,000 tonnes. Vegetable exports reached 31,000 tonnes from 39 varieties, with onions accounting for 11,000 tonnes, ahead of potatoes at 6,000 tonnes and sweet potatoes at 5,000 tonnes.

According to the National Food Safety Authority’s 27th weekly report, England was the largest importer of Egyptian food exports during the reporting period, followed by Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Turkey.

In addition, Egyptian food products reached 200 countries worldwide, demonstrating the country’s extensive global reach. This massive logistical effort involved thousands of individual consignments consisting of grains, flour, and processed produce.

The primary drivers of Egypt’s global food trade include diverse agricultural production across multiple climate zones, strategic geographic positioning with access to European, African, and Middle Eastern markets, and established export infrastructure with modern ports and logistics networks.

Moreover, government support through quality control systems and trade promotion initiatives also contributes to export competitiveness. England served as the primary importer, while significant shipments were also sent to Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Turkey, reflecting strong trade ties across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Egyptian agricultural exports exhibit distinct patterns between fruits and vegetables. Fruit exports reached 30,000 tonnes from 36 varieties, with strawberries leading, while vegetable exports totalled 31,000 tonnes from 39 varieties, with onions as the top category.
