It introduces governance measures that ensure fair treatment of workers and suppliers, extending sustainability principles from the farm to consumer markets.

SPAIN – The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) has officially launched its long-anticipated Sustainability Certification, marking a historic milestone for the sector.
The announcement took place at the INC headquarters in Reus, Spain, during the research-focused NUTS 2025 event.
This initiative represents the first sustainability certification developed specifically for the global nut and dried fruit industry, setting a new benchmark for responsible growth and transparent practices.
INC Executive Director Goretti Guasch emphasized that sustainability has become a strategic priority for the organization and the industry at large.
“While many existing certifications include sustainability components, none have been tailored to address the unique characteristics and challenges of this industry,” Guasch noted. “This certification has been created by the industry, for the industry.”
Her remarks reflect a collective effort to ensure that sustainability frameworks meaningfully align with the realities of nut and dried fruit production, from orchards and processing plants to international trade.
The INC Sustainability Certification provides a structured framework designed to help companies identify key priorities, align operations with global best practices, and demonstrate verified compliance across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) areas.
By doing so, it enables businesses to stand out in an increasingly sustainability-driven marketplace.
During the launch, members of the INC Executive Committee highlighted the certification’s significance across the entire value chain.
Growers, many of whom represent generations of family-run farms, have long championed methods that protect soil health, conserve water, and safeguard biodiversity.
The new certification builds upon these traditional practices by introducing governance measures that ensure fair treatment of workers and suppliers, extending sustainability principles from the farm level to consumer markets.
The certification arrives at a time when consumer and market demand for sustainable products is accelerating, particularly in major markets like China.
It offers practical guidance for both small and large companies, covering topics such as carbon footprint reduction, Zero Waste initiatives, and responsible use of agricultural inputs.
INC Chairman Ashok Krishen concluded the launch by affirming the organization’s vision for the future.
“In today’s world, sustainability is not a ‘nice to have’ — it is the right thing to do,” he said. “We are proud to pioneer and advance sustainable practices, ensuring our industry continues to grow responsibly and sustainably into the future.”
