Swissport acquires majority stake in CV handling, expands Africa ground services

Following the completion of the transaction, CV Handling will gain access to Swissport’s operational standards, digital systems, and network.

CABO VERDE – Swissport has signed a share purchase agreement to acquire a majority stake in CV Handling, the principal ground handling provider at seven airports in Cabo Verde. The transaction follows a government-led privatization process, during which Swissport was selected as the preferred bidder.

For logistics operators and air cargo stakeholders, this acquisition strengthens ground-handling capabilities across the archipelago, positioning Cabo Verde as a vital hub for international air cargo and tourism.

Integration of Digital Systems and Operational Standards

Following the completion of the transaction, CV Handling will gain access to Swissport’s operational standards, digital systems, and network.

Swissport said the move supports its growth across ground handling, air cargo, and aviation hospitality, increasing its exposure to international travel markets and extending its portfolio of hub operations.

The company operates 30 stations across Africa, including Algeria, Morocco, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.

Direct Statements from Leadership

Warwick Brady, President and CEO of Swissport International, said: “We are building a long-term strategic partnership with Cabo Verde’s aviation community, including airports, airlines, and the government. We are determined to help develop a resilient, future-ready ground handling operator that supports the country’s economic growth, tourism and connectivity over the long term.”

We will invest in innovation, sustainability, and people – key drivers of our success. By combining Swiss efficiency with Cabo Verdean hospitality, we will provide the best service with the highest standards of operational excellence and safety to our customers and partners across the country.”

Training Academy and Sustainability Commitment

A training academy will be established in Cabo Verde to support workforce development and will be linked to Swissport’s global talent acquisition and leadership development programmes.

Dirk Goovaerts, CEO of Continental Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, and Global Cargo Chair at Swissport, said: “Swissport is committed to fostering an inclusive and locally rooted workforce, creating a safe and motivating work environment that promotes diversity, belonging, and excellence.”

We also see a unique opportunity to align Swissport’s sustainability programme with Cabo Verde’s national vision, contributing to economic growth through local partnerships while advancing its pathway to net-zero emissions.”

Logistics Outlook

For logistics operators, enhanced ground handling at Cabo Verde’s airports promises improved turnaround times, better cargo tracking, and specialized handling for perishable shipments.

Swissport’s electrified ground support equipment fleet, currently at 26%, aligns with decarbonization goals while supporting regional trade connectivity.
