MartinBauer expands U.S. footprint with acquisition of American Botanicals

The acquisition not only ensures supply chain stability but also enables MartinBauer to meet growing demand for natural, traceable, and sustainably produced ingredients.

USA – MartinBauer, a global botanical ingredients and plant-based solutions company, has acquired American Botanicals, a Missouri-based supplier renowned for its expertise in wildcrafted herbs and sustainable sourcing.

The acquisition strengthens MartinBauer’s agricultural base in the United States, deepens its vertical integration, and enhances its capacity to serve the global food, beverage, and dietary supplement industries.

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. This move follows MartinBauer’s 2019 acquisition of BI Nutraceuticals, signaling the company’s continued expansion and consolidation in the North American market.

Headquartered in Vestenbergsgreuth, Germany, MartinBauer has been supplying teas, herbal ingredients, and botanical extracts since 1930.

The family-owned firm operates in more than 80 countries, processes over 85,000 tons of raw materials annually, and employs more than 4,000 people.

Founded in Missouri, American Botanicals has a long history in the U.S. medicinal plant trade, with roots reaching back to the early days of forest botanical collection and wild ginseng harvesting in the Appalachian region.

The company oversees stewardship of approximately 33,000 acres dedicated to sustainably sourced herbs and botanicals.

It has built a strong reputation for ethical harvesting practices and long-standing grower partnerships, supplying wildcrafted herbs, spices, and roasted carob to domestic and international markets.

“Welcoming American Botanicals into the MartinBauer family is about building on complementary strengths,” said Dr. Michael Wagner, CEO of MartinBauer in North America. “By combining American Botanicals’ deep heritage in domestic sourcing with MartinBauer’s global expertise, we are creating a platform that secures supply, accelerates innovation, and delivers the trusted excellence that our customers depend on.”

The acquisition not only ensures supply chain stability but also enables MartinBauer to meet growing demand for natural, traceable, and sustainably produced ingredients.

The integration will allow American Botanicals to benefit from MartinBauer’s advanced R&D capabilities, processing technologies, and global quality systems.

Greg Flickinger, CEO of American Botanicals, expressed confidence in the merger’s long-term value.

“MartinBauer is the right company to take American Botanicals into the future. It provides continuity for our growers and customers while opening new avenues for growth. Together, we can preserve the authenticity of our heritage while expanding access, innovation, and value across more markets,” Flickinger said.

With this acquisition, MartinBauer becomes among the largest vertically integrated botanical suppliers in North America, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable sourcing and botanical ingredient innovation.
