UK – Nespresso, a subsidiary of Nestlé, is re-entering the on-the-go coffee market in the UK with a new Nespresso Bar planned for near Liverpool Street station in London.
“The on-the-go coffee experience is now an intrinsic part of the UK community,” said Anna Lundstrom, CEO of Nespresso UK and Ireland, highlighting the widespread popularity of coffee shops in the country.
This new bar concept is expected to be the first of its kind in Europe, with plans for further rollout across London and potentially other areas in the UK.
Nespresso has previously made several attempts at UK coffee shops. The company previously had two locations in London but closed them in 2019 to focus on retail stores selling coffee pods and machines.
Nespresso currently maintains a network of 25 retail outlets across the UK, with 10 situated in London.
However, Nespresso has been testing takeaway coffee options in other regions. In 2017, takeaway offerings were launched in stores located in New York and Cannes, France.
Recently, Nespresso introduced a similar “Nespresso to go” concept at a boutique store in Madrid, Spain in November 2023.
Nespresso’s parent company, Nestlé, is experiencing success in the coffee market. The Nespresso business generated SFr6.4 billion (US$7.2 billion) in 2023, reflecting a organic growth of 5.3 percent year-on-year
Additionally, Nestlé recently announced a US$100 million investment to expand coffee production in Vietnam, which will double processing capacity at its Tri An factory.
While Nespresso prioritizes growth, Nestlé is also committed to sustainability efforts. They are collaborating with suppliers and farmers to implement regenerative agriculture practices, with the goal of reducing emissions.
In 2023, Nespresso achieved a significant net reduction of 13.5 percent in greenhouse gas emissions compared to their 2018 baseline. This accomplishment aligns with the company’s sustainability goals of achieving a 20 percent absolute reduction in GHG emissions by 2025 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
