Australia’s The Coffee Club launches in Kenya, eyes East African expansion

The Australian coffee chain has entered Kenya through a local partnership, with plans to grow across East Africa.

KENYA – Australian café chain The Coffee Club has opened its first outlet in East Africa, launching in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of a broader regional expansion strategy.

Located at the newly opened Luqman Mall in Nairobi, the café introduces a contemporary setting tailored for business meetings, casual gatherings, and families. The move marks The Coffee Club’s entry into a growing coffee culture in East Africa.

The Coffee Club, which operates more than 450 outlets globally, has partnered with Luqman Petroleum to lead its expansion across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Luqman Petroleum, established in 2008, currently manages 14 fuel stations in Kenya and has operations across East and Central Africa, including Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“This is a very solid strategic partnership since we are also supporting local businesses,” said Amanda Herholdt, managing director of The Coffee Club Middle East and Africa. “Luqman Petroleum is our partner for The Coffee Club for Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.”

To support local sourcing and value addition, The Coffee Club has partnered with Kenyan coffee roaster Dormans Coffee. Dormans will roast the brand’s signature coffee blends for the region, using locally sourced beans.

“We made sure that it’s Kenyan coffee that is going to be served here, and we were able to replicate that taste experience,” said Rozy Rana, managing director of Dormans Coffee Ltd.

The Coffee Club, which opened its first café in Brisbane in 1989, is owned by MinorDKL, a subsidiary of Thailand’s Minor International.

The chain currently operates 229 stores in Australia and 170 stores across 13 other markets, including China, Indonesia, the Maldives, and the UAE.

As part of its regional rollout, The Coffee Club plans to open more than 10 outlets across Kenya in the next five years, positioning Nairobi as its hub for East African operations.
