Afarinick launches 2,000-acre cocoa plantation in Ghana’s Volta region 

GHANA – Afarinick Company Limited has launched a 2,000-acre Sustainable Commercial Cocoa Plantation in Kpando in Ghana’s Volta Region, marking a major expansion in the country’s cocoa production capacity, alongside the distribution of more than 400,000 improved cocoa seedlings free of charge to farmers. 

The plantation, recognized as the largest of its kind in Ghana, is positioned as a flagship private-sector investment aimed at promoting large-scale, sustainable cocoa cultivation.  

The project is supported by a two-million-capacity cocoa nursery, which is expected to enhance access to improved planting materials and strengthen cocoa expansion efforts across the country. 

The plantation launch was followed by a large-scale seedling distribution exercise held at the Kpando site, where farmers from various districts in the Volta Region received improved cocoa varieties for new farms and rehabilitation of existing plantations. 

Afarinick Company Limited said the initiative is designed to support sustainable cocoa production and improve farmer productivity. 

“The free distribution of seedlings forms part of Afarinick’s commitment to ensuring farmers have access to high-quality planting materials while promoting sustainable cocoa expansion across suitable growing areas in the Volta Region and beyond,” the company said. 

The improved seedlings are developed to deliver higher yields, better disease resistance, and increased resilience to climate change, according to the company. 

Members of Parliament commended Afarinick for its investment in the cocoa sector, noting that access to quality planting materials is essential for improving yields and farmer incomes. 

Sebastian Fred Deh, Member of Parliament for the Hohoe Constituency, described the initiative as a major boost for regional development. 

“This initiative is transformative. The establishment of the 2,000-acre plantation and distribution of seedlings will empower farmers and contribute significantly to the Volta Region’s economic growth,” he said. 

Afarinick said the combined plantation and seed distribution programme will help expand cocoa acreage in the region while supporting national efforts to increase production and strengthen Ghana’s position in the global cocoa industry. 

Davida Pappoe, Programmes Manager at Afarinick Company Limited, said the initiative reflects the company’s corporate social responsibility commitment to farming communities. 

“Our focus is on supporting farmers, improving productivity, and creating sustainable livelihoods, especially in emerging cocoa-growing areas such as the Volta Region,” she said. 

She added that the seedlings were produced at Afarinick’s nursery in Kpando, which has the capacity to generate more than two million improved seedlings annually. The facility is among the largest in Ghana and is designed to meet growing demand for quality cocoa planting materials. 

Afarinick also acknowledged the support of the Seed Production Division (SPD) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), which supplied the cocoa pods used in producing the seedlings distributed to farmers.
