Canada announces US$74M investment in seafood industry, harbour restoration

CANADA – Mike Kelloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and Member of Parliament for Cape Breton–Canso, has unveiled a significant US$74 million investment over the next three years aimed at revitalizing 19 harbours in Nova Scotia.

This announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

In addition, the federal government has committed US$463.3 million over three years to repair and maintain small craft harbours, starting in 2024-25.

This funding will also address damage caused by Hurricane Fiona.

This new commitment supplements Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s (DFO) annual budget of US$90 million for harbour maintenance.

The funds will be allocated to reconstructing and repairing crucial harbour infrastructure, such as wharves and launchways.

Among the projects is the rebuilding of a marginal wharf in Glace Bay, slated for completion in 2026.

“Glace Bay Harbour is integral to our community, providing jobs and recreation for many,” Kelloway said.

“A robust fishing industry strengthens Cape Breton–Canso.”

Additionally, five harbours impacted by Hurricane Fiona—Cape John, Ingonish (Macleods Point), Judique (Baxters Cove), Little Judique Ponds, and New Waterford—will receive over US$11.3 million for restoration.

The investment extends to Newfoundland and Labrador, where the government has pledged over US$101 million to enhance 26 harbours.

This funding will focus on the reconstruction and repair of piers, breakwaters, and other essential infrastructure.

Jaime Battiste, Member of Parliament for Sydney–Victoria, emphasized the importance of these harbours to coastal communities. “Small Craft Harbours are vital for Canada’s coastal economies,” he said.
