Carrefour enters Ghana through partnership with Brands for All Group

The company also plans to expand its presence further across West Africa.

GHANA – French supermarket chain Carrefour is launching operations in Ghana after signing a deal with Geoffrey Fadoul’s Brands for All Group, which recently acquired seven Shoprite outlets following the South African retailer’s exit in November 2025.

Brands for All Group, which represents French brands Decathlon and Yves Rocher in Ghana, will convert the seven former Shoprite stores into Carrefour outlets by April 2026.

Carrefour has indicated plans to open an additional five locations in Ghana by 2028, reflecting its commitment to expanding modern grocery retail in the country.

Before leaving the market, Shoprite was the second-largest supermarket chain in Ghana, operating stores in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.

Carrefour’s entry into Ghana and its existing presence in Côte d’Ivoire raise questions about potential expansion into neighbouring countries like Togo and Benin, which have limited but growing modern retail sectors, as well as Nigeria.

The Nigerian market was identified as a priority for Carrefour in 2014 when it announced ambitions to open 200 stores across sub-Saharan Africa within a decade, but several retailers, including Shoprite and Pick n Pay, have since scaled back operations amid challenging conditions.

Recent improvements in the Nigerian economy, including stabilisation of the Naira and projected growth of the middle class, may increase the likelihood that Carrefour revisits plans for expansion in the country.

In a related development, Carrefour expanded its footprint in Kenya in September 2025 with the opening of its 30th store at Waris Mall in Ruai, Nairobi, covering 1,500 square metres and employing more than 40 people in roles ranging from cashiers to store management.

The Kenyan outlet supplies a range of groceries and fresh produce, with a significant portion sourced from local farmers, providing consistent market access for smallholders while ensuring a reliable supply chain for the retailer.

Carrefour in Kenya is positioning its stores in rapidly growing urban areas, where population expansion drives higher demand for shopping facilities, and the Ruai branch aims to serve the eastern Nairobi region specifically.

The company’s network in Kenya now includes 30 stores, with 25 in Nairobi and surrounding towns, four in Mombasa, and one in Kisumu.
